Ook dit jaar konden de studenten van de UAntwerpen stemmen op hun favoriete studentenvertegenwoordigers, of zoals ze beter gekend zijn: de Stuvers. Maar liefst vier studenten van de Faculteit FBD hebben een centraal mandaat kunnen bemachtigen en zullen volgend academiejaar de belangen van onze faculteit en onze studenten verdedigen. Ik ben Thibo en ik ben tweedejaars bachelorstudent in de biomedische wetenschappen. Net zoals de meesten van ons zit ik ook vast in mijn kot. De eerste dagen brachten zoals verwacht pure verveling en bingewatchen. Maar na enkele dagen besefte ik dat ik op zoek moest naar een manier om me op een nuttige en productieve manier bezig te houden.
Congratulations to Michelle Zurek, Master’s student in Biomedical Sciences, for winning the prestigious ActUA Prize 2020. The ActUA prize is awarded by the UAntwerp Service Council. It promotes personal development through an internship abroad at one of the partner institutions of the Young Universities for the Future of Europe (YUFE) alliance.
Claudio D’Incal is a PhD student and Teaching Assistant in the Proteinchemistry, proteomics and Epigenetic Signaling Lab. He completed a Master in Molecular and Cellular Biomedical Sciences. After he completed his MSc, he did an Educational Master’s degree at UAntwerp and combined his interest in teaching and research.
Dr. Paul Fransen and colleagues from the Physiopharmacology Lab investigated the role of Nitric Oxide (NO) in controlling arterial stiffness. Given the clinical relevance of arterial stiffness as a predictor of cardiovascular risk, NO-signaling pathways could become an attractive pharmacologic target when the underlying mechanisms of arterial stiffening are fully unraveled.

Gwendolyn Vliegen, a PhD student working with Prof. Ingrid De Meester in the Laboratory for Medical Biochemistry, just completed a study on identifying new diagnostic biomarkers for sepsis.
Dr. Elke Ydens and Prof. Vincent Timmerman, together with colleagues from Ghent University and the VIB, studied a crushed peripheral nerve injury and investigated the specific role of the immune system in repairing this nerve damage. They discovered new macrophage subsets that are distinctly localised in peripheral nerves.
Prof. Hans De Winter and his team (Medicinal Chemistry Lab) have been granted a large amount of computer time on the Flemish Tier-1 supercomputer (VSC) to screen for small molecules that could inactivate the Coronavirus.
I’m Georgios Petrellis and I’m an international student in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences. I’m currently doing an internship at the NIH in the USA. Similarly to Belgium, we are also in a lockdown.

PhD training programs are often too focused on academia. Thanks to a European initiative, the Innovative Training Network, PhD students can perform research at two different universities and also obtain practical training in a pharmaceutical company.
