Recently, we launched the Mission in Motion quiz to give colleagues a playful way of exploring how strongly our mission, vision and lines of strength are already embedded in your daily work. Around 200 colleagues completed the quiz in full. That number isn’t representative of the entire university, but their answers do give us a valuable first glimpse of which strengths we most strongly share and which cards colleagues most often play in their work.
The quiz consisted of two parts:
- Fourteen questions explored behaviour linked to our lines of strength. For each line of strength, we asked two questions with three possible answers: strongly aligned, sufficiently aligned or hardly aligned with the line of strength in question.
- In the final question, participants indicated which three lines of strength motivate them most in their job.
What’s embedded most strongly in our work?
When we look at the line of strength that’s most strongly present in the work of our staff, one clearly stands out: Regional and international engagement. In second and third place we find Academic freedom and Active pluralism. These strengths therefore appear to be strongly reflected in the everyday actions of these colleagues, even if they may not always consciously realise it.

What motivates colleagues the most?
If we look at the lines of strength that participants consciously select as their main drivers, we see a different top three:
- Excellence in a caring work environment
- Diversity and inclusion
- Collaboration and interdisciplinarity

The conclusion: regional and international engagement scores highest
When we consider both the line of strength that is most present in colleagues’ work and their motivation, we arrive at the following overall ranking:

What stands out is that Active pluralism ends up somewhat lower here, mainly because it is less often consciously identified as a motivating driver. We also see once again how strongly a caring work environment resonates: it’s the line of strength colleagues most often consciously choose.

Mission translated into practice
Participants in this quiz already recognise themselves in the mission, vision and associated lines of strength. Not because they come from a strategic document, but because we demonstrate them in our behaviour — in how we collaborate, make choices, carry projects forward, and interact with one another and with students.
