That visibility creates opportunities. It shows what UAntwerp stands for: sharing knowledge, bringing nuance and contributing to debates in society. In most cases, media interactions run smoothly: researchers are given the space to share their expertise and work with journalists who approach things carefully and accurately. But media attention also brings responsibility. And pressure.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What does a media appearance involve? How do researchers stay true to their scientific integrity? How do they deal with framing, pressure and reactions? Let\u2019s take a look behind the scenes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Researchers don\u2019t speak in a neutral space<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, researchers who appear in the media do so within a <strong>complex and digitalised media landscape<\/strong>. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uantwerpen.be\/en\/staff\/catherine-vandeheyning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Professor Catherine Van de Heyning<\/a>, specialised in European fundamental rights, that\u2019s a crucial starting point.<strong> A statement rarely remains limited to the original interview or medium<\/strong>. \u2018What you say is immediately picked up and shared, often with commentary, sometimes completely outside the context in which it was said.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Television clips take on a life of their own on social media.<strong> A nuanced conversation is often reduced to fragments<\/strong> in which the context disappears and a different interpretation emerges. Researchers are sometimes boxed into a <strong>particular camp<\/strong><\/strong>.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Catherine Van de Heyning<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s sometimes <strong>difficult to simply \u2018present the facts\u2019<\/strong>. Because <strong>how<\/strong> those facts are received isn\u2019t in your hands. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uantwerpen.be\/en\/staff\/catherine-vandeheyning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Catherine<\/a>, there\u2019s also a <strong>second layer of framing<\/strong>, especially after the interview. \u2018That second framing often happens online and means that researchers are sometimes boxed into a <strong>particular camp<\/strong>. Objective knowledge is sometimes interpreted as a personal conviction or opinion. Or worse: as <strong>a position within a broader polarised debate<\/strong>.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Preparation under time pressure<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Media requests often arise from current events. That means little time and extra pressure. <strong>Still, speed should never come at the expense of accuracy.<\/strong> This is why many researchers <strong>prepare carefully<\/strong>: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">they check the context<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">they look up recent figures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">they formulate their key messages in advance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uantwerpen.be\/en\/staff\/laure-jacquemin\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.uantwerpen.be\/en\/staff\/laure-jacquemin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Professor Laure Jacquemin<\/a>, audiologist who specialises in research into hearing damage, <strong>writes down those key messages<\/strong>. \u2018There\u2019s always a certain tension. <strong>Journalists often want a black-and-white message<\/strong>, while we want to bring nuance. It helps if I can fall back on my key messages during the conversation.\u2019 She remembers one interview in which the discussion drifted towards a side issue. \u2018The journalist kept asking about barking dogs, even though that wasn\u2019t my main message. Fortunately, that fragment didn\u2019t make it into the news bulletin.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 40%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><strong>\u2018Journalists often want a black-and-white message, while we want to bring nuance. They help researchers understand the angle and sharpen the message. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uantwerpen.be\/en\/staff\/peter-vanaelst\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Professor Peter Van Aelst<\/a>, specialised in political communication, that\u2019s part of the job: \u2018<strong>You learn what a medium needs and adapt your answers accordingly without letting go of the content<\/strong>.\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uantwerpen.be\/en\/staff\/catherine-vandeheyning\/\">Cath<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uantwerpen.be\/en\/staff\/catherine-vandeheyning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">e<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uantwerpen.be\/en\/staff\/catherine-vandeheyning\/\">rine<\/a> notes that journalists sometimes keep pushing, even when you indicate that the question falls outside your expertise. \u2018You say: this isn\u2019t my field. And still they ask you to say something about it.\u2019 That makes it even more <strong>important to guard your boundaries, especially under time pressure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And sometimes things move incredibly fast. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uantwerpen.be\/en\/staff\/erika-vlieghe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Professor Erika Vlieghe<\/a>, infectiologist at Antwerp University Hospital, explains<strong> how news requests start pouring in within hours when there\u2019s a possible virus outbreak<\/strong>. \u2018What starts as an ordinary working day can suddenly feel like going back to Covid. But science works differently: with nuance and within a specific context. <\/strong>In practice, many researchers succeed in making that translation without losing their message. But it does require preparation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u2018For the news bulletin, I know I get <strong>two times twelve seconds<\/strong>,\u2019 says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uantwerpen.be\/en\/staff\/peter-vanaelst\/\">Peter<\/a>. \u2018Then you shouldn\u2019t explain your entire research project, but focus on the essence.\u2019 <strong>Media requests also often stem from current events<\/strong>: \u2018They don\u2019t always call me about my research, but for example about a conflict within a political party. Then you have to quickly assess whether you can say something meaningful about it.\u2019 Sometimes that comes close to the limits of their expertise. Peter has received questions about statements by Melania Trump or even about Bart De Wever\u2019s cat. \u2018Those are more <strong>marginal topics<\/strong> where I wonder whether I\u2019m really adding anything useful.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A media appearance always requires <strong>careful consideration<\/strong>. How far can you simplify without distorting your message? You want to communicate your message as clearly as possible. If you consciously choose clear language and concrete examples, you can even make complex information understandable.\u2019 <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Erika Vlieghe <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Integrity under pressure<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides clarity, there\u2019s also the question of <strong>how to remain scientifically accurate<\/strong> when the pressure increases to communicate more quickly and with greater certainty. Here, researchers follow a number of <strong>basic principles<\/strong>: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">stay within your expertise<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">clearly acknowledge what you don\u2019t know<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">avoid absolute statements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uantwerpen.be\/en\/staff\/catherine-vandeheyning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Catherine<\/a>, <strong><em>communicating correctly<\/em> isn\u2019t always enough<\/strong>. \u2018In highly polarised topics, facts alone don\u2019t always achieve your goal. It also requires insight into how information is received and how convictions influence perception.\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uantwerpen.be\/en\/staff\/erika-vlieghe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Erika<\/a> emphasises that it\u2019s important to <strong>recognise when a question is no longer about facts<\/strong>, but about policy or opinion. When a journalist asks you what you think should happen now, the conversation shifts. \u2018Guarding that boundary isn\u2019t easy, but it\u2019s essential for your credibility.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>From ego to consideration: should I accept this request?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many researchers quickly say <em>yes<\/em> to media requests at the start of their careers. \u2018It flatters your ego,\u2019 says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uantwerpen.be\/en\/staff\/peter-vanaelst\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Peter<\/a>. \u2018But over the years, you realise that <strong>not every request is a good idea and you become more selective<\/strong>. Am I really contributing something? Or is this mainly about visibility?\u2019 She also <strong>consciously refers journalists to colleagues<\/strong>, paying attention to<strong> diversity<\/strong>. \u2018The media still too often show the same profile: the clich\u00e9 image of the <em>wise<\/em>, <em>grey<\/em>, male professor. That gives the wrong impression of who professors are today.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 37%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><strong>&#8216;The media still too often portray the same stereotype: the clich\u00e9 of the \u2018wise\u2019, \u2018grey-haired\u2019, male professor. It wasn\u2019t my main area of research, but I still get questions about it today,\u2019 says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uantwerpen.be\/en\/staff\/laure-jacquemin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Laure<\/a>. \u2018Other socially relevant topics, such as hearing problems in children, receive less attention.\u2019 <strong>What\u2019s recognisable tends to stick, including for journalists themselves.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Framing has an impact<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers give interviews, but they have <strong>no control over the title, quotes or context<\/strong>. A nuanced answer can quickly be reduced to a label: for or against, left or right. \u2018You\u2019re very quickly <strong>boxed into a particular camp<\/strong>. While that\u2019s exactly what science tries to avoid,\u2019 says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uantwerpen.be\/en\/staff\/catherine-vandeheyning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Catherine<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uantwerpen.be\/en\/staff\/erika-vlieghe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Erika<\/a> recognises that. \u2018You explain something in a nuanced and careful way. And the next day you read a <strong>headline that sounds more firm than you intended<\/strong>.\u2019 During the Covid pandemic, this became very obvious. Sometimes there are <strong>direct consequences<\/strong> as well. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uantwerpen.be\/en\/staff\/laure-jacquemin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Laure<\/a> gives the example of tinnitus. \u2018It\u2019s often presented very negatively. While in practice many people learn to cope with it quite well.\u2019 After media coverage, she notices that patients become more worried. \u2018The next day our phone line is red hot.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 37%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><strong>&#8216;After media coverage of tinnitus, we see that patients become more worried. During the Covid pandemic, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uantwerpen.be\/en\/staff\/erika-vlieghe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Erika<\/a> received not only many positive reactions, but also personal and sometimes very harsh messages. \u2018That affected me, especially in the beginning.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uantwerpen.be\/en\/staff\/peter-vanaelst\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Peter<\/a> recently received a <strong>negative reaction after a radio interview about Donald Trump<\/strong>: \u2018It was pure abuse. The listener saw me as a Trump supporter, while I had only provided context on why so many people continue to support Trump. That was when I thought: I don\u2019t want to get into this too much.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 38%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><strong>&#8216;During the Covid pandemic, I received many positive reactions, but also personal and sometimes very harsh messages. It makes a major difference in how messages are communicated and received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Science communication isn\u2019t a side issue<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The researchers all agree that media work remains essential.<\/strong> Despite the challenges, they generally have a positive outlook on their experiences with the media. \u2018<strong>If nobody reads your research, it has little impact<\/strong>,\u2019 says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uantwerpen.be\/en\/staff\/laure-jacquemin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Laure<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uantwerpen.be\/en\/staff\/catherine-vandeheyning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Catherine<\/a> stresses our broader role: \u2018<strong>We have a responsibility to society<\/strong>. We need to continue contributing to the debate. If researchers withdraw because of pressure or negative reactions, their research topics will also disappear from the media and the debate.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Science communication<\/strong> is therefore not merely an individual choice, but a <strong>collective responsibility<\/strong>.
