Another thrives on campus dynamics, flexible hours or a different structure. Work-life balance at UAntwerp can\u2019t be captured in a single formula. And that\u2019s precisely where the challenge lies: how do we create a caring working environment that allows room for differences while remaining manageable for everyone?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>No one size fits all<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Within UAntwerp, there is a clear <a href=\"https:\/\/pintra.uantwerpen.be\/bbcswebdav\/institution\/Centrale%20diensten\/Departement%20Personeel%20%26%20Organisatie\/Je%20wil%20info%20over%20het%20loonpakket\/2023.01.19_Brochure%20Telewerken.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">framework for telework<\/a> Staff with a role that allows for telework and a contract for a minimum of 50% can <strong>work from home at least one day a week<\/strong>. Within these parameters, teams can operate as they see fit. At the Faculty of Arts, a specific policy framework was already developed in 2021. Faculty Director at the Faculty of Arts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uantwerpen.be\/en\/staff\/virginie-coucke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Virginie Coucke<\/a> emphasises that this isn\u2019t set in stone. \u2018It\u2019s best to start from a clear basic agreement that works for everyone, with room for flexibility.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Work-life balance looks different for everyone. However, telework doesn\u2019t automatically increase wellbeing, It only works if it\u2019s part of a broader set of measures.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Kristien Lauriks<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>\u2018Being able to work from home is crucial for me. When my partner was seriously ill for a long time, telework gave me the flexibility to be there for her and still continue working at my own pace.\u2019<\/strong> <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uantwerpen.be\/en\/staff\/jeroen-kole_24450\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jeroen Kole<\/a>, PhD student in History, Faculty of Arts<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Telework increasingly popular<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Around <strong>35% of staff make use of telework<\/strong>, on average <strong>1.6 days per week<\/strong>. This percentage has remained fairly stable in recent years. More than half of Administrative and Technical Staff telework, whereas amongst Senior Academic Staff this is around 30%. <strong>This variation mainly reflects differences in roles<\/strong>. That quiet, defined environment makes deep work possible, something that can be more difficult on busy campus days. During those moments of pause, I often find renewed inspiration.\u2019 <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uantwerpen.be\/en\/staff\/eline-ceulemans_23344\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eline Ceulemans<\/a>, PhD student in History, Faculty of Arts<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why we need to keep connecting<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Those who work from home often gain time and focus, but sometimes miss informal contact and quick consultations. That is why teams often <strong>choose moments when they see each other physically<\/strong>, in the form of fixed office days, in-person meetings or joint lunches. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uantwerpen.be\/en\/staff\/ann-quintiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ann Quintiens<\/a>, administration officer at the Faculty of Arts says: \u2018Everyone in our team has fixed days at home and on campus, which means some colleagues see each other more often than others. That\u2019s when <strong>we discuss matters that require collaboration.\u2019 <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 29%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><strong>\u2018Working on campus is essential for trust and collaboration, but I combine it with two to three days of working from home for efficiency.\u2019 <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uantwerpen.be\/en\/staff\/stefaan-walgrave\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stefan Walgrave<\/a>, professor of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.uantwerpen.be\/pintra-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Walgrave.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4369 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.uantwerpen.be\/pintra-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Walgrave.png 500w, https:\/\/blog.uantwerpen.be\/pintra-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Walgrave-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.uantwerpen.be\/pintra-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Walgrave-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/blog.uantwerpen.be\/pintra-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Walgrave-100x100.png 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Work-life balance is about more than working from home<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Work-life balance is also about <strong>self-care<\/strong> and about <strong>how work is organised<\/strong>: flexible hours, autonomy, team agreements on availability and room to adjust (sometimes temporarily). \u2018It\u2019s important to make <strong>explicit agreements about boundaries and availability<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t always have to be available,\u2019 says Virginie Coucke.&nbsp;As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uantwerpen.be\/en\/staff\/sara-eloy_25636\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sara Eloy<\/a>, professor Interior Architecture says: \u2018<strong>Flexibility helps, but it can also be a pitfall <\/strong>if you find it difficult to distance yourself from work. As an event manager, there are periods when I work many hours, but I can recover that overtime during quieter periods.\u2019&nbsp; <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Lisa De Haardt<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What makes it work?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Well-functioning teams make <strong>clear agreements<\/strong> about when they\u2019re available, when they see each other and how they handle absences. This prevents a sense of arbitrariness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uantwerpen.be\/en\/staff\/pieter-caris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pieter Caris<\/a>, director of the Faculty of Design Sciences, it works both ways. \u2018Work-life balance is about the <strong>balance<\/strong> between what an individual needs and what a department needs to function well. <strong>Autonomy and trust <\/strong>are crucial in this.\u2019 He emphasises that <strong>differences are inevitable<\/strong>: \u2018Not every role allows the same flexibility. It\u2019s easier to coordinate things and pick up signals.\u2019 <strong>Many teams therefore invest in fixed office days or shared moments<\/strong>, not as an obligation but as <strong>a way of boosting collaboration and knowledge sharing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>\u2018We can\u2019t do without digital communication. Everyone is different.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Managers make the difference,\u2019 says Virginie Coucke. \u2018<strong>Give space where possible<\/strong>, but also be clear about why something is or isn\u2019t possible, in full <strong>transparency,<\/strong> both towards the individual and the entire team.\u2019 Kristien adds that this comes down to <strong>situational leadership<\/strong>: enabling staff to perform at their best within the team. \u2018But you do have to explain why you make certain choices. The freedom to organise my work means I can take responsibility and follow my own rhythm, while knowing that support is there when I need it.<\/strong>\u2019 <\/em>Eline Ceulemans<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Managers who want to learn more about this can follow training courses<\/strong>, including on peer assessment, feedback, connection through communication and stress detection.
