Until you receive a suspicious email. Or leave your laptop on the train. Or a system suddenly stops working. Then it becomes something that concerns all of us. We spoke with Sabine Marichal, our ICT Security &amp; Risk Officer, about what is done every day to keep UAntwerp digitally secure and why your behaviour is crucial in that respect.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Cybersecurity isn\u2019t an ICT issue. It\u2019s a culture.<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019, UAntwerp was hit by a cyberattack. Everything came to a standstill. In a painful way, it made clear how dependent we are on digital systems. Since then, the university has structurally strengthened its approach to cybersecurity, with additional resources, expertise and initiatives. <strong>The Security Operations Center (SOC) was established, a team that monitors our digital security on a daily basis. But technology alone isn\u2019t enough.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018We can do a great deal at ICT, but if our staff think: \u201cThat\u2019s something that only concerns ICT\u201d, then we aren\u2019t secure. Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility,\u2019 says Sabine Marichal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Digital systems support everything we do: education, research, administration and international collaboration. If they fail, or if sensitive data are leaked, the impact is immediate \u2013 not only internally, but also on our reputation. Trust isn\u2019t restored with a single software update.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are we actually protecting?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>UAntwerp manages a vast amount of data:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">personal data of staff and students<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">sensitive research data<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">financial and administrative data<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">intellectual property<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">collaboration agreements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, our systems, applications and devices (laptops, monitors, servers, Wi-Fi routers, etc.) are crucial for the continuity of education and research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.uantwerpen.be\/pintra-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/cybersecurity-trein-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4294 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.uantwerpen.be\/pintra-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/cybersecurity-trein-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/blog.uantwerpen.be\/pintra-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/cybersecurity-trein-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.uantwerpen.be\/pintra-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/cybersecurity-trein-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.uantwerpen.be\/pintra-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/cybersecurity-trein-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/blog.uantwerpen.be\/pintra-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/cybersecurity-trein.png 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 706px) 89vw, (max-width: 767px) 82vw, 740px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><strong>A laptop left on the train isn\u2019t \u201cjust a laptop\u201d. An unintended click on a phishing email isn\u2019t \u201cjust one mistake\u201d. An unpatched application isn\u2019t \u201cjust a technical delay\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Sabine Marichal, ICT Security &amp; Risk Officer<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:26px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cybersecurity revolves around four key questions:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Do our information and data remain confidential?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Are our data complete, accurate and valid, and protected against unauthorised alteration?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Do our systems remain available? Can information be accessed and used when needed?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Is it clear who performs which actions?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Many people spontaneously think of hackers in hoodies when they hear the word cybersecurity,\u2019 says Sabine. \u2018But the reality\u2019s far more professional and organised. <strong>Nowadays, cybercrime is a business model, involving more money than the drugs trade<\/strong>. And we\u2019re also living in a geopolitically uncertain world, where ideological and political threats are present as well.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What does the Security Operations Center do?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Security Operations Center (SOC) is <strong>UAntwerp\u2019s internal monitoring team<\/strong>. Three specialised staff members follow up alerts and reports every day, generated by pre-installed security tools, the helpdesk portal and reporting phishing. <strong>Their work is primarily defensive: detecting, analysing and follow up on any incidents until they can be closed.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018You can compare it to Swiss cheese,\u2019 says Sabine. \u2018If there is a hole in the security layer, it does not necessarily lead to disaster, provided that there are enough layers. And whatever does threaten to slip through is caught by the SOC. Not every report turns out to be a serious incident. Often it\u2019s harmless, but we investigate every report. <strong>We investigate every report, but not every report leads to an incident. Nevertheless, we must always remain alert.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Where does it often go wrong?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Experience shows that certain issues recur frequently:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Postponing updates<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Updates often contain security improvements. If you postpone them, you unknowingly leave an opening for attackers. Older software is vulnerable to misuse \u2013 and that\u2019s exactly what criminals need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Considering security only at the end<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In new projects, the focus is often on functionality. By adding cybersecurity only at the end, you miss the opportunity to automate measures and limit the risks for the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Inattention<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Many incidents start small. One careless click. One screen left unlocked. One attachment opened too quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mental warning light<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Cybersecurity isn\u2019t about distrust, it\u2019s about awareness. You should always have a small mental warning light on when you\u2019re working with data. What information am I using? How sensitive is it? Can I store it here? Can I send it in this way?
