Kony\u2019s movement, the Lord\u2019s Resistance Army (LRA), began in the mid-1980s with the goal of protecting Northern Ugandans from the newly installed regime of President Yoweri Museveni. But the insurgency turned against civilians, becoming notorious for mutilations and large-scale abductions. By 2006, the LRA had abducted\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/heinonline.org\/HOL\/Page?handle=hein.journals\/hurq30&amp;div=22&amp;g_sent=1&amp;casa_token=bduttgUW2QUAAAAA:IIsUNmFoyvKfB-zO6jdwyKVuqhKCzhh-jV7gst5VRNs05R5DcFtxmH76yNKsCLWX4ya2xJNHSg&amp;collection=journals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">up to 38,000 children and 37,000 adults<\/a>, researchers estimated. Those abducted were forced to become fighters or fighters\u2019 \u201cwives\u201d \u2014 a euphemism for sex slaves \u2014 and household servants. Today, the movement has only about 100 to 150 fighters left, but they are still\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crisistracker.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">abducting and causing insecurity<\/a>\u00a0in the borderlands between Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the LRA has received much global\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-africa-17299084\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">attention<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 think of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Y4MnpzG5Sqc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Kony 2012<\/a>\u00a0video of the American organization\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/invisiblechildren.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Invisible Children<\/a>\u00a0that went viral on YouTube \u2014 few images of the rebel movement are available. Apart from a few widely used pictures of Kony taken during peace negotiations, we know little about what life within the rebel movement looks like. My recently published book,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uitgeverijkannibaal.be\/rebel-lives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">\u201cRebel Lives: Photographs From Inside the Lord\u2019s Resistance Army,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0aims to change this with photos taken by LRA commanders in the early 2000s. I collected hundreds of photos over many years in Northern Uganda, making copies from those held by former rebels, peace activists and journalists.
