There is no doubt that we haven’t achieved that goal, as, for example, the gender pay gap clearly shows. Why is it that humans can reach the moon, but cannot erase discrimination? Of course, we were able to reduce discrimination, but we have never eliminated it. We may have made progress to reduce gender discrimination, but a society without gender discrimination is still a dream for us all. The reason for this can to some extent be explained from an experience I describe below.

When I was 7 years old, I remember I got a paper cut on my index finger. I started crying and my father told me: ‘C’mon you are a man, do not act like a girl’. This was possibly one of many occasions when my father subconsciously sowed a seed in my mind that girls are meant to cry when they are hurt, and boys are meant to act tough. I was taught to think that girls are weak and boys are stronger. These seeds are sown subconsciously in the minds of children every day around the world . Subsequently, our society nurtures these seeds – through movies, social media, schools or any other place where these children interact and live – and they grow into saplings. We grow up watching movies where most of the time men are protecting women and women cannot protect themselves. In schools, we are taught that we are losers if we hit a girl and a coward if beaten by a girl. I find it quite ironic. I am not advising beating anyone, but we at least need to teach that we are not supposed to hurt anyone physically unless it is really necessary in self-defence.

In my opinion, women being weak is not completely wrong. For example, if a 15-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl are asked to lift weights or arm wrestle then we all know what the outcome would generally be. That men are generally physically stronger than women is a truth that cannot be argued with. But when we talk about gender equality, what does it mean? Are we only talking about human rights or are we also opposing stereotypes such as girls are weaker emotionally or they cry unnecessarily? Most of the gender equality believers will not be able to answer such a question.

Equality means that both should be given equal opportunities to show their true potential. But, at the same time, we have created quotas for women in parliament and educational institutions. People believe it is for the empowerment of women, but I think equality and the empowerment of women are two different things. On the one hand, we are talking about equality, and on the other hand, we are providing quotas in the name of the empowerment of women. A man with higher qualifications or more potential could have reached that position which is now been given to a woman in the name of quotas. Of course, I believe quotas for women are necessary. If today women are not competent enough, it is due to the traditions or social psychology of people. We can blame society for such a lack of competence in women. By ‘not competent enough’ I mean that they were not given equal opportunities in gaining knowledge or were not allowed to do what their male counterparts were allowed, or we can say males were never stopped from gaining knowledge. Instead, they were motivated and given the necessary support to do whatever they want.

If we talk about history, there was once a world that was ruled by muscles rather than by brains, but things are different now. Humans have evolved and our values and norms are different to those 1,000 years ago. But as we know that ‘old habits die hard’ and the feeling of superiority over women is so much instilled in our minds that it might take a long time to reach a stage where we can say that society is completely gender-equal. I think that humankind still follows the logic of the survival of the fittest and that men gain a comparative advantage from this competition. If we analyse the last 10-20 years, we can say that we may have done something concerning gender equality, but there is still a long way to go.

In conclusion, the idea of gender equality is something that we can dream about, but it will be very difficult to achieve. To be honest, I do not think it is possible to achieve equality by using laws, regulations and acts. It is something that people need to internalize. So, together with the necessary laws, regulations and acts, we need to spread awareness of what real gender equality means. It is not limited to equal pay or equal opportunities; it is something that we need to have absolute belief in. The world is not governed by muscles anymore, so we can say human societies have reached a stage where we can start working on achieving a dream called gender equality.

Yours,

Anand Shankar Mohanty

22-FEB-2021, Ranchi

Cher Anand Shekhar Mohanty

L’égalité des sexes est une question d’actualité et ne date pas d’aujourd’hui. And I also agree with you that religion itself has the largest role to play in gender discrimination. Women being the housemaker and men being the earner is a notion imbedded so deeply in our minds by our society that it takes a lot of effort to change or to remove that scar. But when we talk about gender equality, it is quite difficult to achieve. Recently, our institution was offered an internship programme from an esteemed organization. Many of my colleagues were interviewed and only boys were selected. Why does this happen? It is not that the female candidates were not competent enough. It is just that the internship programme needs them to attend their office after classes, that is, in the second half of the day and they may have to work late at night. Now, it is quite difficult for a girl to stay in the office until late at night or travel late at night. Even the organization knows this and is helpless to change the situation.

The above is a clear example that even if girls are given equal opportunities and proper support, the society we are living in has structured itself in such a way that we will not be able to achieve 100% gender equality in the near future; because changing the basic structure of a society takes time. For example, people here in India used to marry off their female children as soon as they hit puberty. I am talking about the situation a decade back. There was already a law stating that no girl could marry before the age of 18 and if she does her parents would be jailed. But that did not stop people from organizing child marriages. Awareness campaigns were led by celebrities, people were taught the social evils of child marriages and today the rate of child marriage has declined to almost nil in India. Similarly, the idea that women are not only housemakers but can be earners is something that we are also spreading through awareness campaigns and other methods. We can see a positive change, with the enrolment of females in higher studies increasing and with the percentage of working women increasing day-by-day. As for attaining 100% gender equality, we need to work on many other things, like making our society safe for women (as safe as it is for men). People need to stop judging women and need to accept that women are equally responsible and reliable as men. But, as I said in my previous letter, gender equality is something that will take a long time to be fully achieved.

Yours,

Anand Shankar Mohanty

19-MARCH-2021 Ranchi

Cher Anand
Shankar Mohanty
