Through the news, I have a slight idea
of what the COVID-19 situation currently looks like in your country, and I hope
you and your loved ones are safe. In India, including in the Indian capital
from where I’m writing this letter to you, the situation has been moving back
and forth lately. Schools, colleges and other public institutes were shut for a
very long time and as of now the government is trying to open up these places
in a phased manner. So, in a nutshell, COVID-19 is kind of the centre of
everything that is happening.

And this is actually the motive behind my choice of this topic for our
discussion. I’m a first-year law student, and I was very excited to visit my
university. I took a one-year break after high school before starting university,
and I did science subjects in high school. So, taking up law, I was looking
forward to delving into this new field and interacting with my peers, seniors
and professors. But due to the ongoing pandemic, I most certainly haven’t been
able to experience any this as of yet. And as things appear right now, I don’t
think it will happen any time soon.

I attend my classes everyday with a group of people who I haven’t met in
person. It feels weird, but at the same time, it is actually very nice as well.
It’s like having a bunch of online friends, like you and me, through this
initiative. But yes, my point is, having been raised in such an environment
where human interaction is given priority, it has been a difficult ride to
adapt to all this. Also, there is a fresher’s party which is supposed to happen
every year for the first years and that was also online this year. Anyway,
leaving aside the things in my own situation that I am sad about, we have all
lost some really good opportunities.

In law school, we are introduced to something called ‘mooting’ in our
first years, and almost every law student initially takes part in this. Mooting
is actually kind of a dummy court, where we role-play as lawyers in a courtroom
setting and we discuss a hypothetical case given to us in front of a judge.
It’s great and a really fun activity, and actually quite an important part of
our law school experience. If I’m not wrong, you’re studying informatics, so
you might have hackathons, I guess. If so, it’s something similar to that probably.
Let me know in your letter. So, anyway, we will be having our first mooting
rounds in about a week, but online. Not that it’s not great, I’m really
excited, but this activity is a lot more fun offline.

So, based on my personal experience and also from what I have heard from
my friends in other fields as well, it’s actually a little difficult to cope
with this online teaching system. It’s great to expand on and add to what one
is doing in the offline mode, but not a sustainable method on its own. Many
people have connectivity issues, so they cannot attend the classes sometimes.
There is always an option of watching the recorded lecture, but, again, nothing
can replace the kind of discourse in an offline class.

Speaking from a broader perspective, a lot of people around the world
who are currently using this mode of education are facing problems. I
understand my privileges and the fact that my parents and teachers have done
more than enough in these times to ensure I get my education in the best way
possible. As a law student and, most importantly, as a human being, I would
also bring into consideration the majority of people who don’t have access to
such resources, people who are specially abled and don’t have the requisite technology
to adapt to this system.

I am certainly well aware of the challenge’s world leaders are facing
right now, and in no way am I blaming all this on them. It’s just how our
society is inherently, in its very core. We often tend to neglect stories from the
other side. This pandemic has more evidently brought all this to light, and has
actually forced us to think about it. For this online mode of education to
function effectively across the board, there is a prerequisite of inclusivity
in the system. I feel that we as people who have seen this pandemic close up
and how it affects us at different levels should actually think about this.

I hope that through this letter I have given you some food for thought.
Blending with my own personal experiences and my views on a broader scale, I
send this letter and my best wishes to you. I would also like to apologize if
any of these views are in conflict with what you believe. I would certainly
like to hear what you think about this and look forward to your reply.

Your friend,

Jyotsna Gupta
24-FEB-2021, Delhi

Amicalement,

Clara Safi Nabintu
1-MARS-2021, Bukavu

Hello friend,

I’m so glad to hear from you. I hope you are doing well when this letter
reaches you. This correspondence has given me a lot of food for thought so far.
And it was nice to hear how you have tried to make the best out of the
situation at hand and to learn about the online teaching system in your
country.

I would like to share with you some information about the structure of
online education in my country right now. It’s actually quite similar to the
one in yours. The government has taken new initiatives and decided to broadcast
the classes on television and radio. And some private and social welfare
organizations are also contributing by providing less privileged students with
the necessary resources to attend online classes. But again, as you pointed out
in your letter, the benefits of such initiatives do not extend to a certain group
of people, for example those who don’t even have a television set at home. And
in the backdrop of such a grim reality, it’s hard to say that online education
is sustainable.

I totally agree that one of the positive sides of the pandemic and this
mode of education is the ‘self-learning’ process. I also learned a few things by
myself during the lockdown. Online learning puts a lot of onus on us to look
after our own education, and people who have the resources should step up,
embrace themselves in this process and also help others.

I really liked how you mentioned helping out colleagues who do not have
the resources to attend the online classes by sharing with them. But adding to
that, some people, due to the fear of the pandemic, which is still quite active
here, may not be able to invite their colleagues to watch online classes
together, but they could instead maybe share notes with them by mail. Or we could
explain the topics to them on the phone. My point is that once we are aware of
how things are, it’s basic humanity to help those who cannot help themselves
because we are blessed with such resources which enable us to do this. This is
actually the time that we have to stand up for each other.

The paradigm of online learning is multifaceted, it reflects intricate
layers of our society, how it has been and how it functions. It would be
ignorant on the part of any of us to see this paradigm in the absence of those
layers. And so, with what it looks like currently, although online education is
the only way in the current circumstances, it really isn’t sustainable and
cannot be used in the long run because, if it was, it would lead to the exclusion
of certain groups of people from the basic human right to education.

I would really like to hear your opinions on this. This topic is surely
of great importance to you, me and everyone. Looking forward to your reply.

Kind regards,

Jyotsna Gupta
7-MARCH-2021, Delhi
