For security reasons, the name of the student from Nicaragua was anonymised.

Letter 1

For: Muyangayanga Daniella

RD Congo

Université Catholique de Bukavu (UCB)

Hello my dear friend, it is with great pleasure that I greet you and contact you through this letter. I am extremely excited for the conversations we’re about to have and the valuable lessons, opinions and insights that we are going to exchange.

The concept of a decent and dignified job is a simple one: every individual has the right to work in an environment that is safe, healthy, and free from discrimination or harassment. This includes fair wages, job security, and opportunities for growth and advancement. Unfortunately, many individuals around the world are denied these basic rights, and are forced to work in exploitative and oppressive conditions that undermine their dignity and well-being.

As we navigate the challenges of the modern world, one of the most pressing issues we face is the need for decent and dignified jobs for all men and women. In a world where economic inequality is rampant and basic human rights are often disregarded, it is more important than ever that we work towards a society that values and supports all individuals equally, regardless of their class, position or education.

In my country I’ve witnessed a daily dose of indecency, to say the least, when it comes to the workspace and environment of the people from my country, so this is a problem that is really close to my heart. From people working sometimes 2 or 3 jobs a day in terrible conditions, to LITTLE. KIDS working from early ages, some since they are 3 years old, because their parents make them to, so it’s normal to find these infants selling candy or cleaning car windows on the streets, or selling fruits, toys, clothing, food, etc. It’s heartbreaking to see those kids, that should be going to school, learning new things, or just playing games and being kids, but instead they’re under the sun working long hours to provide for their families. So, in a country where the minimum wage sometimes it’s just one third of the amount it takes to cover the most basic way of living, it’s normal to see situations like the ones i’ve mentioned take place.

Things such as these happen in my country and many other countries for a various amount of reasons, such as political corruptcy that allows these things to happen, lack of education specially for the poor, discrimination, and the fact that a lot of people don’t know better and just think that the exploitation they receive it’s normal and okay, and those who know better simply can do nothing about it. Mentioning these reasons may result incredibly overwhelming to us citizens/ordinary people, because they are problems way bigger than us and sometimes we may feel like we can do nothing about it.

However, as overwhelmed i may be about it, I also believe that we as a society, must work together to create an environment where all individuals have access to decent and dignified jobs. This begins with addressing systemic inequalities that perpetuate poverty and limit opportunities for marginalized communities. We must invest in education and training programs that help individuals acquire the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the workforce, and provide support and resources for small businesses and entrepreneurs to create new jobs and stimulate economic growth.

At the same time, we must address the root causes of discrimination and inequality in the workplace. This includes combating gender-based discrimination and harassment, ensuring equal pay for equal work, and providing support and resources for individuals with disabilities or other challenges. Ultimately, the goal of creating decent and dignified jobs for all men and women is not just about economic growth or productivity. It is about creating a more just and equitable society, where every individual has the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential. By working together to address these issues and create a more equitable and inclusive world, we can build a brighter future for ourselves and generations to come.

I often wonder what I can do as just a young student, and even though I don’t have many options to share, I think the most important thing we ALL have to do is educate ourselves on how to create fair and safe spaces, and to strive deeply for a bigger and better future for our country, to have an ambitious vision on our future plans and to define how are we going to make the world a bit more safe and secure. It is in our hands. Education is the main key to growth.

If you ask me about a dream of mine, I want to be an entrepreneur with multiple businesses, employ people from anywhere, and give them incredible workspaces, payments, and opportunities to grow, so that each and everyone of my employees sees their job as something beautiful that brings them happiness and fulfillment, and that allows them to maintain themselves and their families, and live a happy and relaxed life. Also i would love to invest in the education system and create opportunities for the people that are often neglected from that right.

I wanna end my letter with these 3 questions that I hope you’re able to enjoy giving a response to:

What occasions have you witnessed in your country related to unethical work treatment?

What measures do you think companies can take to assure a safe, sustainable and ethical workspace?

How would you like to make a positive change in your country, whether in the future or now?

I hope you enjoyed reading this letter. Thank you again for joining me in this conversation, because perhaps small interchange of opinions and ideas such as these one, are the first step to create a better future, which I firmly believe we can create.

I’m really excited and looking forward to reading your response. Take your time and I know it will be great. In the meantime, I hope you stay safe, well and happy.

Sincerely,

C.

Nicaragua

Letter 2

Cher C.,

J’espère de tout cœur que ma lettre vous trouvera bien portant et par la même occasion, vous témoignez ma grande joie d’avoir lu votre correspondance en y prenant plaisir. As for the first time, I’m more than happy to exchange my opinions and takes on this topic with you, Daniella.

I would like to first address and answer the questions you provided me, starting with the one about women in my country’s workspace and the opportunities they have compared to the ones men have. I personally think this answer may vary depending on the circumstances, experiences and life of the person you ask, so I’m gonna try to give 2 perspectives, one that is close to my life and what I’ve seen myself, and another one more neutral and open. From one side, my whole life I’ve been surrounded with incredibly powerful women that have been examples of strength and perseverance, but I wanna specially mention my mom. She has worked both as an entrepreneur and also under companies as an employee, and in both situations she has been successful, she has been able to reach high levels of education and has been able to greatly succeed on the workspace, she has fought for and earned every opportunity she’s had and has been a leader and example to so many other men and women, and just as her, I’ve met and I’ve seen so many other women that have had great achievements and have been given incredible opportunities of work and education, sometimes even better than the ones some of their male peers receive. However, as inspiring and admirable these women are, it doesn’t escape me for one moment that not every woman in the country has the same experience, there’s still sexism, abuse and inequity, especially in the more rural parts of the country, and this shouldn’t be the case at all. I’m still reflecting on this topic, but I think that my resumed answer would be that women in my country have pretty equal opportunities to the men, however, sadly not everyone in my country is able to access to these opportunities, but I don’t think that has to do with gender, but more with socioeconomic reasons and the discrimination and lack of exposure they have to such opportunities, which is just as sad and unjust, and needs to be treated and addressed with equal seriousness.

When it comes to the influence of culture in the workspace, I think lots of people would say that Nicaraguan culture may be sexist in some ways, and as I mentioned before, even though women are able to have equal opportunities, sadly they don’t always encounter the same respect and treatment as their male coworkers. You can still find men talking and behaving to women in very inappropriate and even disrespectful or abusive ways, and a big part of them will justify their acts with culture, the way they were raised, and the way they think things are. As men, it is extremely important to recognize this and deeply reflect if we are or have been part of this kind of treatment towards women, and make sure to never be part of it again and call out the ones that engage in this behaviors.

I’m glad you asked about ways of promoting dignified work, since I think that with this interaction we are doing that. We can only do so much on our own to change a corrupt and sometimes evil system, but what we all can and should do is have conversations such as this one between our friends and family, recognizing the wrong things and coming up with ways to fight them and change them is a great starting point. It’s our responsibility to answer

the call of being a good person, it starts with us the creation of an equal, respectful and safe workspace for all, but specially for women. We need to be those who call out the ones that engage in disrespectful and nasty behavior, or that apply abuse of power over employees. We as communities have to stand in unity and fill ourselves with good values and education, to make sure we take no part in the creation of an unjust enviroment. I hope for safety and security in every workspace, I hope that every individual can feel comfortable doing their job, I hope that for my country and for every country, but we as individuals and as groups need to do the correct inner work and to not be afraid to call out those in the wrong. Ending injustice requires a collective effort from individuals, organizations, and governments. This includes education and awareness campaigns to highlight the importance of gender equality, advocating for legislative changes, and supporting initiatives that promote respect between coworkers. Moreover, it is essential to hold individuals and organizations accountable for discriminatory behavior and ensure that there are consequences for those who engage in harassment or discrimination.

You’ve touched a very important thing that felt very close to me and my opinions, and that is that we need to promote education to everyone. In my opinion, education is the foundation of everything, is the one thing that frees us from ignorance and that will make each and everyone of us free and closer to make our goals come true. Education is a right we all have, and that we all should have access to. Education is also essential for economic growth and development. It provides individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to participate in the workforce and contribute to the economy. Moreover, education can promote social cohesion and foster understanding and tolerance between individuals from different backgrounds, leading to a more inclusive and equitable society. It is a very big wish of mine, that each day more and more people, especially kids, are able to access great levels of education, and maybe even one day not one person is left uneducated, and therefore, marginalized for this same reason.

In the meantime, I think we need to focus on educating ourselves as much as we can and educate others in need, be compassionate and understand that not everyone has the privilege of education, and we can even involve ourselves in ways to help communities or groups that are more vulnerable in these aspects. I firmly believe that education and work opportunities go hand to hand, and we can not talk about fair and equal jobs for everyone, regardless of race, gender or socioeconomic background, without mentioning the fact that there is a huge level of inequity in the access of education.

It is my wish that each day we as a society grow to be more respectful, kind and compassionate. I cannot wait for the day I can say that there are not any more kids around in the streets working but instead they’re at school, that everyone can live comfortably with having one job, and that the workspace has become an enjoyable, respectful and safe space for everyone, both men and women.

Daniella, it was an incredibly great pleasure to exchange letters with you. I value this time and interaction so much, because they push us to think outside the box, reflect about current and serious problems and to get new opinions and perspectives. I would like to end my letter with these questions that I hope you enjoy giving an answer to:

● How much do you think Education has to do with the experience a person has in the workspace and the opportunities that are offered to the?

● How would you expect to bring educational and professional fairness to every person in your country? What do you think it takes?

● What would you advice a person that is trying to make a change and doesn’t know how or what to do?

I’m really looking forward to reading your final letter, and I hope mine finds you well. It was a pleasure to learn from you, please keep thriving and growing. I believe you will get very far in life if you keep your determination and ambition growing, so please do.
