Aganze,

Thank you for reaching out and taking the time to learn more about me. I’m Punit Kumar Singh, originally from India, and currently pursuing a PGDM-Rural Management program from Xavier Institute of Social Services, Ranchi. I’m glad to have connected with someone who shares my enthusiasm for achieving our goals despite coming from different countries. I’m confident that our collaboration could result in something great.

Thank you for informing me about the initiatives in place to end hunger in your nation. It is inspiring to see a government working towards eliminating a common problem faced by many people around the world. I am glad to tell you that my country, has also taken steps to address this issue. We have launched a number of programmes and policies that have helped us make significant progress toward ending hunger.

India is a developing nation with a large population. This has resulted in the prevalence of various issues that require attention from our government. Despite the efforts made by our government, it is evident that these problems still exist and need to be addressed. In this letter, we will explore how these issues are being tackled in India and what more can be done to solve them. The Covid-19 pandemic has had a devastating effect on the global economy, leaving millions of people around the world in dire financial straits. In India alone, 15 million individuals have been pushed into poverty, with 5 million of them being particularly hard-hit. This has created an urgent need for governments to come up with effective solutions to help these individuals and their families out of poverty. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the fragility of India’s food security system, which has left millions of people in poverty and hunger. Despite the existence of many food security programmes, they have been severely mistargeted in terms of who they are intended to benefit. This has resulted in a situation where the majority of those who need help are not receiving it.

Despite our government’s efforts to tackle this problem, it has remained a big question mark in terms of how successful they have been. In order to understand why this is so, it is important to look at the various factors that contribute to hunger and poverty. These include economic inequality, lack of access to food and resources, inadequate nutrition education, and poor infrastructure. By looking at these issues in detail, we can gain insight into what needs to be done in order for our government’s efforts towards eliminating hunger among those living below the poverty line to be successful.

Approximately 75% of India’s population lives in 6,38,365 villages spread over 32 lakh square kilometers. Out of this approximately 90% is concentrated in the villages having a population of less than 2000. Food insecurity and poor health are two of the most pressing issues in rural economies, agricultural systems, and natural resource management. To address these issues, significant changes must be made to ensure that food production is sustainable and that access to nutritious food is available to everyone. This can be done by introducing new technologies, improving existing agricultural practices, and strengthening natural resource management strategies. By making these changes, we can reduce the risk of food insecurity and improve overall health outcomes for people living in rural areas.

The Indian government is making significant strides in its development strategy, with several programmes and initiatives being implemented across the country. These programmes are designed to help achieve the country’s objectives of economic growth, poverty reduction, and social inclusion. From rural electrification to financial inclusion, the government has taken a holistic approach to ensure that all citizens benefit from these initiatives. With these programmes in place, India is well on its way to achieving zero hunger. Hunger and poverty are two of the most pressing issues faced by many countries around the world. In India, the government has taken several initiatives to combat these problems. These programmes have been successful in helping the country’s citizens to lead a better life and end hunger and poverty. The government has implemented numerous programmes such as providing free meals to school children, providing subsidized food grains to poor families, launching employment schemes to create jobs for rural youth, and providing access to financial services for small businesses. All of these initiatives have had a positive impact on reducing hunger and poverty in India. Few programme I am discussing below:

Public Distribution System (PDS) was developed as a method of managing shortages through the economical distribution of foodgrains. PDS has grown in importance as a component of the government’s strategy for managing the nation’s food economy. PDS is supplemental in nature and is not meant to supply a household or a particular sector of the population with all of their needs for any of the goods distributed under it. The Central Government and the State/UT Governments share oversight of PDS. The Food Corporation of India (FCI), a subsidiary of the Central Government, is in charge of procuring, storing, transporting, and allocating food grains in bulk to the State Governments. The operational role includes allocation within the State, determining which families are eligible, issuing Ration Cards, and monitoring the operation of Fair Price Shops (FPSs), among other things.

The Mid-Day Meal Program is an Indian school lunch programme created to improve the nutritional status of school-age children across the country. The programme now goes by the name POSHAN Scheme. Children in government primary and upper primary schools, government-aided Anganwadis, Madarsa, and Maqtabs receive free lunches on working days as part of the plan. The Midday Meal Program is the biggest programmes of its kind in the world, feeding 120 million kids in more than 1.27 million schools and Education Guarantee Scheme locations.

Bringing up Sustainable Development Goals (SDG-2). The UN has set 8 targets and 13 indicators to end world hunger.

Universal access to safe and nutritious food.

End all forms of malnutrition.

Double the productivity and income of small food producers.

Sustainable food production and resilient agriculture practices.

Maintain the genetic diversity in food production.

Invest in rural infrastructure, agriculture research, technology and gene banks.

Prevent agriculture trade restrictions, market distortions and export subsidies.

Ensure stable food commodity markets and timely access to information.

Comparing my country’s current condition with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has revealed that we have a long way to go in order to meet the targets by the end of 2030. This is an ambitious goal, but if we are able to make the right investments and take the necessary actions, we can make significant progress toward achieving our objectives. The SDGs provide us with a roadmap for sustainable development and serve as a reminder that we need to make sure that no one is left behind in our efforts. In many countries, food security is an important issue due to the prevalence of malnutrition. This is especially true in my country, where food nutrition is essential for the health and well-being of its citizens. Fortunately, there are numerous NGOs that are focusing on this issue and striving to improve food security. These NGOs work tirelessly to ensure that everyone has access to nutritious and affordable food options. They also educate people on the importance of eating a balanced diet and provide resources for those who are struggling with malnutrition.

Thank you for suggesting the food bank which is absolutely an excellent idea to deal with food wastage and to feed needy one, Food wastage is a major problem in India, with millions of people going hungry every day. Fortunately, there are organizations that are working to address this issue by setting up food banks. During COVID food bank shows their wide presence and helped people with food and water. Further, I would like to know about the measures your government is taking to reduce hunger and achieve SDG2’s aim.

I hope this brief overview helps you understand India’s contribution toward achieving zero hunger.

Thanking you.

Punit Kumar Singh.

Letter 3

Bukavu, le 14 avril 2023

A : PUNIT KUMAR SINGH

Objet : Concernant l’objectif “faim zéro” : sources d’inspiration et obstacles.

Cher PUNIT KUMAR SINGH,

Aganze

Letter 4

Subject: – Regarding Achieving zero hunger: inspirational and obstacles.

Dear Joshua M. Aganze,

I’m doing fine; how about you? I hope all is well with you. I read your letter, and I found it to be quite informative. I learned a lot about your government’s ongoing programme to end hunger. Let’s start with more deep discussion so that both can enhance their existing knowledge about the two nations. We are aware that, climate change is harming food supplies, and many countries, particularly developing ones, have made reducing hunger a top priority. Since agriculture is one of the sectors most affected due to climate change, it is crucial to approach these concerns holistically from the outset rather than formulating or planning stand-alone solutions. By 2030, specifically agriculture will have to change rapidly to meet the growing demand for food, which will compound resource degradation.

As a result, the current emphasis is on incorporating climate resilience into Indian agriculture and natural resource management. So many successful, “climate-smart actions” projects are implemented collaboratively with local partners, government agencies, and community-based organizations, including self-help groups, village cooperatives, and farmer-producer organizations. To establish the framework for “climate-smart actions” at all levels and accomplish the goal of “zero hunger” by 2030, the current situation demands quick attention and local support.

In this letter, I am just sharing some more information regarding the use of hunger measurement tools i.e., Central government, local governments, and non-profitable organizations use the instruments provided by International Institutions to assess the level of sustainability with success. Provide instructions on how to utilize the Multidimensional Poverty Index methodology as a useful instrument for evaluating the impact of support for programs aimed at ending hunger and reducing poverty. India’s food supply varies from region to region, making it difficult to meet the needs of the population in each region solely through domestic production. A wide range of factors contribute to the issue of food insecurity and hunger, so any remedies must also be multifaceted. I think that both the business and public sectors must participate actively. This calls for enhancing both public and private sector organizations’ governance, productivity, and accountability. I am just going to discuss some of the non-profitable organization which is working in India, especially in the field of reducing hunger:

1. Akshay Patra Foundation: This initiative, which was founded in Bengaluru in 2000, seeks to end classroom hunger by implementing a mid-day food program in government and government-aided schools. 1.8 million students from 16,856 schools in 12 states and two union territories of India are currently served by Akshay Patra.

2. Robin Hood Army: The Robin Hood Army is a volunteer-based, no-funds society that helps those who are less fortunate, such as homeless families, orphanages, patients in public hospitals, and residents of nursing homes, by collecting leftover food from local eateries.

3. Fight Hunger Foundation: This initiative, founded in 2012 by Prof. M. S. Swaminathan, works to treat malnutrition among disadvantaged children in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Mumbai. To secure inpatient and outpatient care, foundation members first identify children who are chronically malnourished. They then work with the local community and healthcare professionals. To treat malnutrition, they run education programs about nutrition and hygiene at the neighborhood hospitals.

4. Feeding India: Through their app, the volunteers of this program gather leftovers from parties, weddings, and other events and give them to the homeless in sheltered houses across 32 Indian towns.

5. Embracing the world: With the help of this effort, 10 million people in India will have access to the fundamental necessities of life: food, shelter, healthcare, education, and a means of subsistence. Additionally, they provide raw food to the indigenous tribes in the outlying regions. When there are natural catastrophes or other emergencies, they are constantly active.

These are not only a few of the well-known organizations that are active in my country; there are many more. For example, most religious institutions offer free food, or, to put it another way, they provide food to anyone who wants it without any restrictions. By asking your religious leader’s permission, you can also implement this concept in your nation.

What can we do to support the Zero Hunger initiative?

Building a world without hunger requires cutting down on waste, improving diet, and embracing a sustainable lifestyle. For a safe supply of food in the future, our decisions today are crucial. Simple activities like not wasting food, producing more with less, adopting a healthier diet, and advocating for Zero Hunger will help us make the movement a way of life and help us rediscover the meaning of food.

I can say that a more integrated level of reengineering and development is required for the entire food production, preservation, and distribution system. Both the warehouse and cold chain transportation systems need a lot of expansion and enhancement. These will aid in lowering post-harvest losses to farmers and preserving the quality of their output. The surplus food should be transported to places where there is a food shortage using a sufficient transportation system. The general public’s knowledge of the effects of food waste should be raised through the media. The government should develop rules to enhance food recycling and penalize food waste in the supply chain.

I will also suggest that more encouragement is needed to get private organizations involved in the fight against hunger. According to the report, private organizations only operate in a few states and cities but do an excellent job overall. These are often developing countries. There is no such private engagement in India’s poorer states, such as those in the northeast. According to a report by the Boston Consulting Group, there is a $700 billion opportunity in tackling the problem of food loss and wastage, thus young people of the nation should be financially motivated to pursue start-ups for making effective use of the extra food wherever in the country.

I think that every municipality should implement the idea of a community refrigerator, we can also suggest the government of our nations. Start a campaign to plant fruit trees on the homestead lands and degraded woodlands that belong to or were given to the poor. In addition to increasing the nutritional value of the impoverished people’s food, this will diversify their sources of income and lessen their reliance on one season of the year. Fresh, nutrient-dense produce should be included in the food rationing plan for the poor to provide them with affordable food. So I have just shared this time some of the good initiatives and ideas regarding achieving zero hunger. If you have any suggestions regarding this, please suggest me.

I hope this brief overview helps you understand India’s contribution toward achieving zero hunger.

Thank you.

Punit Kumar Singh.

These letters are an exchange between Punit Kumar Singh from India and Joshua M.
