For security reasons, the name of the student from Nicaragua was anonymized.

Letter 1

Dear N,

Subject: Environmental education from a young age

I believe that Environmental Education from a young age is an amazing asset to address the environmental emergency in a comprehensive manner with the youth. In my opinion, it expands the capacity of their mental as well as their physical health. Children with a lack of ability to concentrate consistently benefit from more openness to nature. The greener a youngster’s ordinary climate, the more sensible are their side effects.

I think that Environmental Education also underscores helpful learning with others, decisive reasoning and conservation, and an emphasis on an activity procedure with certifiable applications. It is a hands-on and intelligent discovery that ignites the creative mind and opens the imagination. Environmental Education also helps in empowering both students as well teachers. I will explain how it helps. It promotes active learning, citizenship, and student leadership. It empowers youth to share their voice and make a difference at their school and in their communities. It helps teachers build their own environmental knowledge and teaching skills.

In my opinion, it also offers open doors for experiential learning beyond the homeroom, it empowers understudies to make associations and apply their learning. Environmental Education assists students with seeing the interconnectedness of social, natural, monetary, social, and policy-centered issues.

According to UNESCO, there are four reasons why it is important for children to learn about Environment:

To make them more aware and conscious of environmental problems.

To boost their interest in caring for and improving the environment.

To enhance their ability to learn about their surroundings.

To broaden their ecological knowledge in subjects such as energy, landscape, air, water, natural resources, and wildlife.

There are also some of government initiatives to promote Environmental Education. Since I am from India, I will be talking about government initiatives in my country.

In 1991, the Supreme Court of India directed the government to make environmental education compulsory at all levels of education, and the government incorporated the environment in the school syllabus from 2004-05.

Talking about me, I have also studied Environmental Sciences (EVS) during my schooling from class 6 to 8 and again during my grads. As it is made compulsory by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in India to provide Environmental Education. In my opinion, it is very important for each and everyone to know about the environment, sustainable development, and how it plays an important role in inculcating the right values and ethics.

According to me, Environmental Education also has several other characteristics,

It enhances the thought of peoples’ experiences.

It enlightens people to understand their environment.

It provides room for better living.

It serves as an engine room in creating awareness.

It provides aesthetic beauty.

Before writing further, I would like to mention that the points I have added, you might agree with them because the points which are there, are more related to global perspective rather than representing a specific place, country, or anything.

Now the main point is here, why do we need to study environmental education, how will we reflect on it, and how it will help us in the future?

To answer all these, I have some points through which I can explain.

First, we need to know about the environmental issues which will further provide answers to all the questions.

The major environmental issues are:

Global Warming, Waste disposal, deforestation, climate change, over-exploitation of resources, and many more.

To overcome all these issues, we need to have environmental education from a younger age.

Now again it may be learned at a younger age.

So, the basic answer is it helps in gaining factual and basic knowledge, in which we most probably study about sustainable development, global warming, its threats and major careers.

The most important point which I would like to mention is the basic thing that we are taught in the very beginning is recycling, planting trees, and avoiding the use of plastic and polybags which I think is the best way to inculcate environmental knowledge for the younger generation.

I hope the points which I have made are enough now. At last, I would like to ask you,

Your personal experience in relation to Environmental Education

The scope of Environmental Education in Nicaragua

How does this affect your career?

looking forward to your letter.

Thanks, and regards

Mayank Bhaskar

Letter 2

Managua, Nicaragua, viernes 24 de marzo del 2023

De: N

A: Mayank Bhaskar

Asunto: Educación medioambiental desde la infancia

Estimado Mayank Bhaskar,

N

Letter 3

Ranchi, Jharkhand, India, Friday, April 14, 2023

From: Mayank Bhaskar

To: N

Subject: Environmental education from childhood

Dear N,

warm wishes, I hope you are doing well.

It was very nice to read your letter and your thoughts regarding environmental education.

Now I would like to add something more and finally will conclude with some questions.

Environmental education in India at the community level is an important aspect of addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable development. India is a country with a diverse range of communities, including rural and urban populations, each with their unique environmental issues. Community-level environmental education aims to create awareness, build capacity, and promote action towards sustainable environmental practices within these communities.

Here are some key aspects of environmental education in India at the community level:

Awareness Building: Environmental education at the community level starts with creating awareness about environmental issues, such as deforestation, air pollution, water pollution, waste management, climate change, and biodiversity conservation. This can be done through various means, including workshops, seminars, posters, pamphlets, community meetings, and social media campaigns. The focus is on sensitizing community members to the impacts of their actions on the environment and the need for sustainable practices.

Community based conservation projects: Many community-based conservation projects are initiated in India to involve local communities in protecting the environment. For example, community-led initiatives for afforestation, wetland conservation, and sustainable agriculture practices are implemented to promote environmental sustainability and livelihood improvement.

Skill Development Programs: Skill development programs related to environmental conservation are conducted at the community level to empower local communities with the necessary knowledge and skills to address environmental challenges. These programs may include training on sustainable farming practices, renewable energy technologies, and natural resource management.

Participatory Approaches: Participatory approaches are widely adopted in community-level environmental education in India. These approaches involve local communities in decision-making processes, planning, and implementation of environmental conservation programs. This helps to build a sense of ownership and responsibility among community members towards the environment.

Cultural Practices: Many communities in India have traditional ecological knowledge and practices that have sustained the environment for generations. Environmental education at the community level in India often incorporates such traditional practices, including traditional farming methods, water harvesting techniques, and conservation of local biodiversity, to promote sustainable practices rooted in local cultural values.

Environmental education in India is a crucial field of study and practice that aims to raise awareness, promote understanding, and encourage action on various environmental issues. It is an interdisciplinary approach that integrates knowledge from different fields, such as ecology, biology, geology, social sciences, and policy, to create a holistic understanding of the environment and its conservation.

In India, environmental education is primarily promoted through formal education systems, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), government initiatives, and community-based programs. Some key aspects of environmental education in India include:

Curriculum Integration: The Indian government has taken steps to integrate environmental education into the formal education system by incorporating environmental topics into the school curriculum. Environmental education is included as a mandatory subject in the syllabus of schools under the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) and the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in India. This helps in building awareness and knowledge about environmental issues from an early age.

Government Initiatives: The Government of India has launched various programs and initiatives to promote environmental education. For example, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) implements the Environmental Education, Awareness and Training (EEAT) scheme, which aims to promote environmental education and awareness among various stakeholders, including students, teachers, and communities.

Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs): Several NGOs in India are actively involved in promoting environmental education through various activities, such as workshops, training programs, awareness campaigns, and community engagement. These NGOs work at both grassroots and policy levels to raise awareness about environmental issues, promote sustainable practices, and encourage active participation in environmental conservation efforts.

In conclusion, environmental education in India is a growing field that aims to raise awareness, promote understanding, and encourage action on environmental issues. It is integrated into the formal education system, supported by government initiatives, implemented by NGOs, and empowered through community-based programs. Through these efforts, environmental education in India strives to create environmentally conscious and responsible citizens who actively participate in environmental conservation efforts for a sustainable future.

Talking about my area, I am residing in Ranchi city, Jharkhand State, India. In my area the community acts as an impact player in Environmental concerns. We have RMC (Ranchi Municipal Corporation) which looks after all the environmental issues. In India under PM- SBM Swachh Bharat Mission, an initiative for clean and green India, we have two dustbins Green Dustbins for wet waste and blue colored dustbin for dry waste. Which in return helps in decreasing environmental issues.

To answer your questions, here are some ways we can prevent children from seeing environmental care as another duty:

Make it fun and engaging: Children are more likely to be interested in environmental care if it is presented to them in a fun and engaging way. Incorporate games, activities, and hands-on experiences that make caring for the environment enjoyable and exciting. For example, organize nature walks, plant trees, create eco-friendly crafts, or have a scavenger hunt to identify and clean up litter.

Connect with their interests: Children have different interests and hobbies, and tapping into those interests can help them connect with environmental care on a personal level. If a child is interested in animals, for instance, you can talk about how protecting the environment helps protect wildlife habitats. If a child enjoys gardening, you can explain how composting and planting trees can improve soil health and promote biodiversity.

Show real-world examples: Help children understand the real-world impact of environmental care by showing them concrete examples. This can include showing them videos, pictures, or stories of how environmental issues affect people, animals, and the planet. For instance, you can discuss the impact of pollution on marine life or the consequences of deforestation on local communities. This can help children develop empathy and a sense of responsibility towards the environment.

Talking about that question, The proverb “We do not inherit the land from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children”

In my view it reflects the idea of intergenerational responsibility and sustainability. It emphasizes the importance of considering the impact of our actions on future generations and the need to protect and preserve the Earth for their benefit.

Furthermore, the proverb suggests that our actions today can have long-lasting effects on the environment and society, and we should be mindful of how our choices and behaviors can shape the world for our children and future generations.

The proverb also touches on the interconnectedness and interdependence of all living beings. It acknowledges that humans are part of a larger ecosystem, and our well-being is closely tied to the health and balance of the natural world. This highlights the importance of living in harmony with nature and adopting sustainable practices that prioritize the long-term health of our planet.

In summary, the proverb promotes a holistic and forward-thinking perspective on our relationship with the environment and the need to be responsible stewards of the Earth for the benefit of our children and future generations. It encourages a mindset of sustainability, mindfulness, and intergenerational care in our interactions with the environment.

Environmental education from childhood can bring several benefits to sustainable human development in India.

Awareness and Appreciation of Nature, Environmental education from childhood can help children develop an understanding and appreciation for nature and its interconnectedness. This can foster a sense of responsibility towards protecting the environment, including forests, rivers, wildlife, and other natural resources. By instilling a love for nature at a young age, children are more likely to grow up to be environmentally conscious citizens who value and protect the environment.

I hope I have answered all your questions, but before leaving, I would like to ask/know something from you:

How can we practice sustainable gardening or farming to protect our environment?

Your opinion or experience or thought on how you see the future Nicaragua in terms of a sustainable environment.

What are some ways we can reduce our carbon footprint and contribute to mitigating climate change for a sustainable environment.

Kind regards

Mayank Bhaskar

Letter 4

Managua, Nicaragua, domingo 14 de mayo del 2023

De: N

A: Mayank Bhaskar

Asunto: Educación medioambiental desde la infancia

Estimado Mayank Bhaskar,

N

An exchange between Mayank Bhaskar from in India and N from Universidad Centroamericana in Nicaragua.
