It’s both exciting and humbling to be writing to someone whom I have never met before, someone who lives in a different part of the world and has had unique life experiences that are different from my own. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to connect with someone like you and to learn more about your culture, traditions, and way of life. It’s incredible to think that we live in such a vast and diverse world, and yet here we are, communicating with each other through the power of the written word on the topic of both of our interests and knowing diverse viewpoints.

Before I start with my introduction, I would first thank you for sharing your thoughts and observations on gender equality in Africa. It’s inspiring to hear about your involvement in student clubs and national associations that advocate for women’s rights and gender equality.

I am a student pursuing a Post Graduation Diploma in Management (PGDM) from Xavier Institute of Social Service (XISS), Ranchi, India. I am a finance professional and very ambitious. People say I ask many questions which is true because I am very inquisitive and eager to learn. Well, that’s something that will help me to grow my career and increase my thinking ability, but the other thing that excites me, even more, is food. Yes, I am a foody person and love to try various cuisines and items.

I am a 25-year-old woman who has come a long way with determination to achieve heights in my life. But, one thing which makes me wonder always is whether being a woman will be a barrier to my success. If you ask me, I will say never. Being a woman will never stop me to get what I want. However, it is a fact that not all women have the zeal to fight for themselves. What about their growth? How are they managing to survive in a workplace? All these questions have always been something I deliberate upon and think of ideas to bring changes. I am following this saying – “Be the change you want to see”. For me, this is one of the changes I want to see everywhere – gender equality.

The observations you mentioned in your letter about Africa have made me realize that the issue of gender equality is global and may be worse in some parts of the world.

In your letter, you mentioned some questions, which I would like to answer.

To answer your first question, I believe that as women take more place in the workplace and gain more power and income, there will be a shift towards greater gender equality. However, I also recognize that this may be met with resistance from some who are accustomed to patriarchal norms. It’s important for us to continue promoting gender equality and educating others on the benefits of a more equal society for everyone.

As for your second question, in companies in India, there is a strong belief to create an inclusive workplace that values diversity and promotes equal opportunities for all employees regardless of gender. Companies actively seek to hire and promote individuals based on their qualifications and merit, without any bias towards gender. Additionally, the Companies have policies in place to prevent and address any instances of harassment or discrimination, including sexual harassment which is made compulsory by the law.

To address your final question, unfortunately, instances of abuse of power in the form of sexual harassment or other forms of harassment can occur in any workplace, regardless of gender representation. However, it is the responsibility of the Company to create a safe and respectful work environment for all employees and to take swift action against any form of harassment or discrimination.

Now I would like to put down some of my viewpoints and observations, along with questions for you:

When I say gender equality, I do not mean to always prefer women, but what I mean is to bring them on the equal step as that of men. Women are sometimes neglected at the workplace saying that they will not be able to handle certain projects at certain locations because that requires a man’s skill and attitude. I would like to ask you how you think we can bring change in the mindset of people that women can take on challenging tasks just like men.

The other point is for men. You know, we have come to a stage where we have too many influencers and feminists who are walking with the flag of women’s empowerment and equality. However, some women take undue advantage of it and bully men. There are instances where men are blamed for something they did not do, in the workplace and they don’t even get an opportunity to explain because the complaint got raised by a woman. This is really sad. Do you agree with this point? Have you observed or experienced such events? How do you think the policies should be made to bring gender equality in the true sense?

I hope this response makes us connect well and that we are on the same page. I would love to hear back from you soon. Please feel free to share anything that you are comfortable with, and don’t hesitate to ask me any questions as well. I am excited to start this journey of getting to know each other as pen friends.

Thanks & Regards,

Kumari Kirti

Xavier Institute of Social Service,

Ranchi, Jharkhand, India

Letter 3

 Bukavu 13 Avril 2023

A Kumari Kirti

Institut Xavier du service sociale

Ranchi, Jharkhand, Inde

Objet : Discussion sur l’égalité des sexes au le lieu de travail

Chère Kumari Kurti,

J’espère que cette deuxième correspondance te trouvera en parfaite santé et de bonne humeur également.
