For security reasons, the name of the student from Nicaragua was anonymized.

Letter 1

Querida Sakshi:

Saludos cordiales, tu nueva amiga

A.

Letter 2

Dear A,

It is so good to hear from you. I am Sakshi Singh, a student at XISS, Ranchi, India. I am pursuing an MBA in Human Resources. This is my first year in the course and I am already looking forward to an amazing upcoming second year.

Reading your letter was an amazing experience for me. The way you described your country and the various sustainability practices carried me to a world of imagination. It was insightful to get a look into Nicaragua’s sustainability measure. I appreciate how you as a future engineer are aware of the environmental concerns. Here in my country as well, we have a dearth of female Civil Engineers.

India has many cultures and a rich history. It is a part of South Asia and has a vast breathtaking landscape. We are a developing nation. Struggle, innovation and a repetitive process of trial failure or trail success is how we’re trying to move forward.

Being a future Human Resource Manager, I am heavily concerned for people and the environment they work in. Work culture, job satisfaction is very much dependent on where they work. Is it healthy? Is it good for them, as well as for the environment?

Sustainable development in India encompasses a variety of development schemes in social, cleantech and human resources segments.

As you talked about switching to LED lights, India has also taken steps in a similar direction. We use LED light instead of the yellow candescent lights. In addition to LED lights, Dimmers are also prevalent at workplaces. It not only saves energy by dimming lights but also uses less wattage. Dimmers also extend the life of light bulbs. In my opinion, by choosing vendors that utilize recycled materials, manufacture responsibly, and engage in green logistic practices, organizations can move forward. The US$ 1.79 billion Indian lighting market is estimated to be growing at 18 per cent annually and switching rapidly to energy-efficient systems.

You will be amazed to know that the contribution of renewable energy to the power business in India has now reached 70 per cent, as compared to 10 per cent in 2000. We are trying to use less non-renewable resources to generate power.

I am thrilled by how in Nicaragua, even at ground level, eco-friendly practices are trying to make space for themselves. It is appreciable how schools and institutes promote non-plastic products. Here also, we as students are taking steps towards the same. We often select areas, go out in groups and hold cleanliness drives.

As per your question, something that I’m really proud of, is the Clean India Campaign initiated by the Government. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Campaign Clean India) is a national level campaign by the Government of India covering 4.041 statutory towns to clean the streets, roads and infrastructure of the country. But nothing is possible without the support of citizens. Though many try to do their part, many are still ignorant.

Talking of achieving sustainability, we’re far behind. I won’t call our country a sustainable country. We’re ranked 121 in the overall score that measures the total progress towards achieving all 17 SDGs. But with a positive outlook, I’ll say we are all trying.

I personally have grown up hearing stories of how India is not clean, not progressing, not liveable, and then seeing the same people who tell these stories throw leftovers on streets, leave lights on. Yet on the other hand, there are environmentalist, unsung heroes, who are trying to make a difference. So I’m not without hope. I hope to keep doing my part in making India sustainable.

I am sure you’ll stay and definitely succeed in breaking the loop of negative thought process. I believe in you.

Ah, all these paragraphs already! I’ll give you a breath now. I would love to know if you have any ideas of your own around how we can contribute to bringing sustainability.

Excited and awaiting to read from you,

Your friend,

Sakshi Singh

Letter 3

Querida Sakshi:

Tu amiga A.

Letter 4

Dear A,

It is my pleasure to hear back from you. My heart saddens with the thought that this is the last letter in this trail of informative exchange of thoughts. It has really been an experience of a lifetime to share words on such a bugging topic as sustainability. I am glad to have been part of this program which not only compelled me to think beyond my country but also opened a door to dive deeper in my own country.

Lately, I often find myself immersed in thoughts of how we can contribute more to the responsibilities of building a sustainable environment. I read about how you propose to approach this issue. I deeply understand your concerns about the government. Democracy of thoughts, opinions and actions is very important to express care towards the country. It is indeed a pivotal part of change. As I mentioned in my letter earlier, our government does a lot, but corruption is a painful area that never loosens its grip. The schemes, the efforts are all in vain until and unless the government funds reach the allotted areas rightly.

I was shocked to see the figure that is invested in the lighting of Trees of Life. I am not against the idea of beautification and infrastructural development but 46.575 dollars isn’t a number that can be overlooked. Great initiations can be made on the part of the Government with an amount this large. A small effort to put up solar panels to light up the streets, or setting up public water filter machines can seem like a large investment but in turn yield sustainable results for humankind.

I am in favour of your idea of using banners to spread awareness about sustainability. They are truly an energy efficient way of bringing something to the common eye. My concerns lie in the question, Is awareness enough? Are we not already running low on time? Awareness is definitely a start, but we need to haste and start doing. Pollution is at its peak, landfills popping up everywhere and the consequences of global warming is not unknown to us.

To fret will make things worse, you and I making small efforts from our end is what will lead the way forward. As you must be worried about how to build sustainable houses, it is devastating to even think of bridges collapsing. It is unjust to lose the lives of our countrymen just because of the poor quality of construction material. I am sure you are working towards being a more responsible citizen and professional.

There are a few areas that India is looking forward to work on, one of which being- Green Cement driven by use of renewables to power 60% of all kilns and grinders and large scale carbon capture by 2030. Some people are of the opinion that Development and Environment cannot co-exist, I choose to disagree. Sustainability is the bridge that will connect these two chasms.

I was pleased to hear about the indigenous community that stays in harmony with Mother nature there. In India we have the Tribal people mostly inhabiting Jharkhand State where I live and areas around, who worship nature. Their festivals are all in praise of the environment. We have a lot to learn from them.

I have never been to Japan. In this digital era though, no place is too far away and no information unreachable. I have read about Japan and their efforts towards sustainable development. Japan is a country that has always fascinated me. I read that Japan ranks 15th of 162 countries for progress on their achievement of SDGs according to the Sustainable Development Goals. Isn’t that exhilarating? I once read something about their history which had some historical reference to a sustainable environment. The Edo period between 1603 and 1868 in Japanese history is known for a circular society. Why? As Japan took the isolationist foreign policy during the Edo period, the relations and trade between Japan and other countries were severely limited. With little resources, Japanese people took good care of everything they had and made a sustainable society without waste. We have so much to learn here. I’m sure you’ll agree! You’ll be amazed to know that Edo society created jobs related to repairing and recycling. For example, there were many second-hand cloth shops. After wearing out second-hand kimonos, people still used them as floorcloths. There were also repair specialists for ceramics, umbrellas, paper lanterns and many others. One more interesting job was a collector of human excrement. They sold it to farmers as compost. This makes me ponder, if they could do this hundreds of years ago, why can’t we today?

There is much scope yet to be discovered and explored. The world combined with our brains has innumerable possibilities. I am sure that us innovating and finding solutions is how we can make a difference. During these few months, I saw a potential in you- a fire to impact the world. I believe in you. I hope you keep well and strong. I am thankful that I found you.
