First of all, I would like to say that I am very excited to have this conversation with you about the gender bias that us women face every day especially in the workplace even in today’s era. Thanks to the evolution of technology, women across the globe can now raise their voices and put forth their ideas and beliefs and make the world a better place for our sisters who are not fortunate enough to do it themselves. I remember this quote I stumbled upon by Maya Angelou “Each time a woman stands up for herself, without knowing it possibly, without claiming it, she stands up for all women.”

I feel that our topics of discussion align so well with each other, while I want to discuss the gender bias in the workplace, why and how it happens, and how it affects an individual, you chose to discuss whether social stereotypes of women hinder their development and integration into public management which can be seen as a further extension of my topic. In this letter, I would put down my thoughts on the gender bias in the workplace and I would really like you to revert with your thoughts on your topic so that we can come on the same page regarding both of our counterparts.

I had read in an article of Mint by Nandita Mathur that wrote ‘85% of Indian working women claim that they have missed out on raises, promotions or work offers because of their gender.’ The article also mentions that about two-thirds of working women and working mothers say they faced discrimination at work due to familial and household responsibilities. While companies are hiring more and more women in their workforce every day in the name of diversity, my question is whether they are doing this just because they have to in the name of social acceptance of the company, or do they actually want to abolish the social stigma against women’s right to work? Yes, I know my last sentence sounds antiquated but trust me it is not. Social stigma against working women exists even today and that too in many countries. The thought that women are meant to be working only for their households is primordial. There have been various reports that indicated the gender gap prevalent in the Indian corporate world. In India, data from the National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO) shows that the percentage of women working in finance, insurance, real estate, and business services, which includes information technology services, is only 13.4% across rural and urban populations.

These are the data and numbers that reports regularly show in the country’s statistics, but they don’t show you the real struggle and pain the women face because of these discriminations.

Let me tell you a story about this woman that I know very closely who has been in the field of education for a long time. She belongs to a good family, well educated, even more, educated than some of her colleagues, and yet she has been subjected to discrimination at her workplace more than once. Sometimes she has been demeaned in front of others directly and sometimes indirectly. She has been admonished at her workplace because she had to attend to a family emergency once. She tells me about the double standard that exists in such places, she reiterated how the men in her workplace get to take leave for lame reasons and no one admonishes them, and yet when she informed her family about the emergency she was ridiculed by her fellow colleagues. But it feels great to see that whenever a woman is pushed down, she somehow ends up soaring even higher. She is beloved by her students, respected by her female colleagues, and admired by the staff of the institution. And this is what all the women in our country do, we fight, and we keep on fighting. I know another woman who works in a completely different field and when I asked her “have you ever been subjected to gender bias at your workplaces, having worked at some of the most reputed organizations in the country where there are supposedly “better work culture?”, her reply was simply “Of course, I have faced gender bias at my workplaces.” She said it so casually that it made me wonder if it is so common that women feel it is a part of their everyday life. And if so, then why? Are these women less educated? Or do they earn less? Or do they lack talent? The answer does not matter, it does not matter if they are educated or uneducated, talented or not, whether they earn less or more than their fellow colleagues, there will always be prejudice against our gender, making us feel lesser than others.

So, how do we prepare ourselves as future working women in such a prejudiced world? How do we prove ourselves that we are no lesser than anyone else without having to scream at the top of our voices, we end up doing more than the other gender and yet we get less in return, and I am not talking about the pay differences that exist in the industry, that is a different topic for a different time.

I would like to leave these three questions for you to ponder upon and revert to me:

Is your country’s condition somewhat similar, better, or worse than ours? If you feel it is worse, I would like to know why you think so?

How do you feel your topic of choice is related to what I wrote in my letter?

Is there any famous feminist group or society or individual in your country who works for the cause of gender equality? And if yes, would you mind sharing some of their works with me?

Hope to hear from you soon,

Yours truly,

Satyapriya Mitra

Ranchi,

18th April 2022

Votre nouvelle amie congolaise,

Nabami Naomi

Bukavu, 21 mai 2022

Dear Naomi,

Firstly, I would like to apologize for the delay as I have been busy with our final examinations of PGDM. I would also like to inform you with a happy heart that I am now graduated and am accredited with Gold Medal by our college. Another achievement in the bag of a woman.

Thank you for your letter. It was so interesting to see things from your point of view. I am also very sorry to hear that you have been a victim of discrimination against women. I am appalled to read about your friend, although this is a very common and recurring theme with women at workplaces. This is absolutely nauseating and unacceptable. We read about them every day, we listen to such kinds of stories often and yet we are so helpless when these things happen to our close ones.

I wish our government were more functional and stricter against these things. But it is just a wish, and I honestly don’t have much hope for it to be fulfilled.

I agree wholeheartedly with you that dismissing women on the pretext that they are weak will never let a country and its economy develop. We are the heart and soul of a nation. A nation that treats its women wrong cannot progress.

I found out about the organizations that you shared with me. It feels good to know that there are people who are working with all their might towards this objective. I also hope that more and more people understand the gravity of this and contribute toward women’s holistic development in their nations.

Before I go on to answer your questions, there is one thing that I would like to add to this letter. I know we women are victims in all of this, but we should never think of ourselves as victims. We women should band together against this evil. I have known and seen women who pull other women down. And this should never be the case. We should always push each other upwards and not the other way.

To answer your first question, I feel blessed to say that I have never faced any such prejudices in my life. Although, I have seen my near and dear ones face such things. I believe that the people I have met in my life, especially the male, are respectful towards the other gender. I hope by saying this I don’t jinx myself.

Coming to your next question, yes, sexual harassment in workplaces is very common in our country and almost in all the industries that exist in our country. I have seen various committees that are established in the organizations to address this issue. I don’t know how effective these committees are in reality. There might be two scenarios that exist in big and reputed organizations in our countries. The first is that the cases are few and hence not very heard of and the second case might be that these cases are hidden from the public to maintain the reputation of the organizations.

There was this movement that raised an uproar a few years ago in India. It was called the ‘Me too Movement’. Women from various fields and various parts of the nation were telling their stories of sexual harassment. But soon the voices calmed down. The current situation is not much better as well.

At last, I would like to share with you the work of a few organizations in India that work for women’s rights as per your request.

Here are a few links that you can peruse to find out about these NGOs.

https://www.giveindia.org/blog/10-ngos-for-women-you-should-support-for-women-rights/

5 Organizations Fighting for Women’s Empowerment in India

There are also few organizations that work for the trans people in our country, and it makes me feel so great that our country is now evolving and broadening its thinking.
