Die prijs reiken de Jonge Academie en de KVAB jaarlijks uit aan wetenschappers die erin slagen om hun onderzoek op een toegankelijke manier naar buiten te brengen.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prof. Gilles won de prijs naar aanleiding van haar boek &#8216;(h)OREN)dol?!&#8217;, dat in 2022 verscheen. In dat boek formuleert ze heldere antwoorden op vragen die pati\u00ebnten met tinnitus oftewel oorsuizen kunnen hebben. &#8220;Ik zie heel veel pati\u00ebnten met tinnitus in mijn praktijk. Ze lijden er echt onder, met problemen voor onder andere slaap en concentratie&#8221;, vertelt de professor. &#8220;Wat mij altijd opvalt, is dat ze met veel vragen zitten maar niet altijd de juiste antwoorden vinden. Door online doemverhalen te lezen krijgen ze vaak net nog meer bezorgheden wat de tinnitus niet ten goede komt.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dat komt omdat de perceptie en met name de last van tinnitus deels be\u00efnvloed kan worden door hoeveel aandacht je eraan schenkt. Hoe meer aandacht en emoties er tot de tinnitus worden gericht, hoe meer de hersenen dit symptoom net naar voren halen en de belemmering kan toenemen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Schrijven in de lockdown<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En dus besloot prof. Gilles om de vragen die pati\u00ebnten haar stelden te bundelen in een boek. &#8220;Ik kreeg vaak de vraag of ze de info die ik hen gaf konden nalezen. Dat was een paar jaar geleden nog niet voorhanden. In mijn vrije tijd heb ik alle informatie verzameld, en later, in de lockdown het boek uitgeschreven.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De jury selecteerde het boek van prof. Gilles omdat het &#8216;op een toegankelijke manier de problematiek van tinnitus onder de aandacht brengt en de wetenschappelijke inzichten erover uit de doeken doet&#8217;. Dat is ook wat de professor het belangrijkste vindt als ze met een pati\u00ebnt spreekt: &#8220;Ik wil sensibiliseren, de juiste wetenschappelijke informatie geven. En dat gaat het best in heldere taal die pati\u00ebnten begrijpen. Door mijn ervaring in de kliniek weet ik ook in welke uitleg pati\u00ebnten zich kunnen herkennen. Ik hoop dan vooral dat de inzichten op een positieve manier kunnen bijdragen aan hun traject.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Je kan tot 14 november <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eoswetenschap.eu\/publieksfavoriet2023\">stemmen op prof. Gilles voor de EOS Publieksprijs<\/a> die verbonden is aan deze wedstrijd.
