De Niet-Invasieve Prenatale Test of NIPT is vermoedelijk de meest voorkomende toepassing van deze techniek. Het is een eenvoudige en veilige manier om op zoek te gaan naar chromosoomafwijkingen bij de foetus. Het bloed bevat vrij circulerend DNA. Deze korte DNA-fragmenten zijn bij een zwangere vrouw voor negentig procent afkomstig van de moeder en tien procent van de placenta. Oorspronkelijk was de test bedoeld om het syndroom van Down, ook wel trisomie 21 genoemd, op te sporen bij ongeboren baby\u2019s. Bij trisomie 21 zijn er drie kopijen van chromosoom 21 aanwezig. Intussen worden alsmaar meer toepassingen van de NIPT ontwikkeld.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"401\" height=\"290\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.uantwerpen.be\/collectief-geheugen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/NGS.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5134\" style=\"width:457px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.uantwerpen.be\/collectief-geheugen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/NGS.png 401w, https:\/\/blog.uantwerpen.be\/collectief-geheugen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/NGS-300x217.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 401px) 100vw, 401px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Next Generation Sequencing wordt ook toegepast bij voorspellend DNA-onderzoek. Dit soort onderzoek doet men wanneer er een erfelijke ziekte in de familie voorkomt en men wil weten of de ziekte kan worden doorgegeven aan volgende generaties. Voorheen konden onderzoekers slechts kleine delen van genen kosteneffici\u00ebnt lezen. Hierdoor was het zoeken naar de oorzakelijke mutatie vaak moeilijk. Dankzij exoom- en genoomsequencing met NGS is dit veel eenvoudiger en sneller geworden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De NGS-toepassing zorgt ook voor verschuivingen in de microbiologie. In het verleden werd de aanwezigheid van een type bacteri\u00ebn in de staal van een pati\u00ebnt ge\u00efdentificeerd door het testen van een klein stukje van het bacterieel genoom. Bacteri\u00ebn die genetisch sterk op elkaar lijken werden vaak als dezelfde beschouwd. Dit was een probleem omdat sommige bacteri\u00ebn anders behandeld worden.
