Het genoom als kookboek van het leven<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Een complete set van DNA wordt het genoom genoemd. De werking van het genoom kan je vergelijken met twee kookboeken. Hierin staan recepten met daarin alle informatie die nodig is voor de opbouw, groei en ontwikkeling van een organisme. We krijgen de helft van ons genoom van onze moeder en de helft van onze vader, vandaar de twee kookboeken. De meerderheid van onze cellen hebben dus twee vergelijkbare exemplaren. Deze exemplaren bestaan uit 23 chromosomen. Dit kan je zien als de 23 hoofdstukken van het kookboek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De chromosomen bevatten genen. Dit zijn dan de recepten die in het kookboek staan. Ons genoom bevat ongeveer 22.000 genen. Veel recepten dus. Maar de genen vormen slechts \u00e9\u00e9n \u00e0 twee procent van het genoom, want tussen de genen staan nog teksten waarvan we de betekenis nog niet kennen.<\/p>\n\n\n

Vervolgens bestaan de genen uit basen die je kan vergelijken met de letters van het kookboek. Er zijn vier basen: Adenine (A), Thymine (T) Guanine (G) en Cytosine (C). De recepten zijn dus geschreven in een taal van slechts vier verschillende letters. De volgorde van de basen bepaalt de informatie voor de aanmaak van alle eiwitten die nodig zijn voor het functioneren en ontwikkelen van een organisme. Dankzij technieken zoals Next Generation Sequencing kunnen we deze genetische code lezen, onderzoeken en bestuderen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Een wijziging in \u00e9\u00e9n of meerdere basen wordt een variant genoemd. We kunnen een verandering van onze ouders erven of we kunnen de eerste in onze familie zijn die een variant heeft. Ons DNA bestaat uit veel van deze veranderingen. Meestal helpen ze ons van elkaar te onderscheiden zoals bijvoorbeeld de oogkleur. Maar ze kunnen ook weinig of geen impact hebben. Sommige veranderingen kunnen echter onze gezondheid en ontwikkeling be\u00efnvloeden. Gezondheidsproblemen die worden veroorzaakt door genetische varianten worden genetische aandoeningen genoemd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
