Dat is een schrift waarbij zo snel geschreven kan worden als uitgesproken. Heel vroeger werd het al gebruikt om notities te maken in steen, maar later werd het ook gebruikt om gespreksnotities te maken in allerlei verschillende contexten. De lessen in de Sint-Ignatius Handelshogeschool werden dan ook in verschillende talen gedoceerd. Deze bloeide op na de vrijmaking van de Schelde in 1863 en door de koloniale handel na de oprichting van de kolonies Congo-Vrijstaat en nadien Belgisch-Congo.
