Het wordt gebruikt om objecten te onderzoeken die te klein zijn om enkel met het blote oog te bestuderen. Bovenaan de microscoop zit het oculair, je kan deze vergelijken met een verrekijker. Als je hierdoor kijkt, zijn objecten die eerst klein en vaag lijken plots een heel stuk groter en scherper. Er zijn eindeloos veel objecten die je onder een microscoop zou kunnen leggen. Van plantencellen tot micro-organismen.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Een microscoop wordt voornamelijk gebruikt bij medisch, biologisch en materiaaltechnisch onderzoek. Dit model werkt met doorvallend licht. Dit betekent dat het object wordt belicht langs de onderkant. Het object dat je wil bekijken, is daarom best transparant. Bij een opaak object krijg je een schaduwbeeld waarbij enkel de contouren duidelijk zichtbaar zijn. Bij dit ouder model is de lichtbron niet inbegrepen in tegenstelling tot de recentere modellen. De universiteit heeft deze microscoop en nog andere wetenschappelijke instrumenten overgenomen uit het Historisch Archief van Agfa-Gevaert. De microscoop was oorspronkelijk van Lieven Gevaert zelf.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lieven Gevaert was een invloedrijke uitvinder, zakenman en daarenboven technicus. Hij vond het welzijn van zowel zijn medewerkers als zijn klanten zeer belangrijk en heeft zo bijvoorbeeld als eerste in Belgi\u00eb een mutualiteit opgericht.
