In het begin van de 19de eeuw werd de polarimeter uitgevonden: een apparaat ontworpen voor chemische analyse. Dit mysterieuze instrument bevat de visuele kenmerken van uiteenlopende objecten zoals een microscoop, een telescoop of zelfs een muziekinstrument. Toch is het veel complexer dan het lijkt. Het wordt gebruikt voor verschillende zaken, zoals het meten van je bloedsuiker, het bepalen van de kwaliteit van een suikerbiet, of voor het onderzoeken van je oog bij de oogarts. De polarimeter werkt via een ingewikkeld principe. In essentie is het een toestel dat gebruikt wordt om bepaalde eigenschappen in vloeistoffen te meten via een invallende lichtstraal. Dit object illustreert de wetenschappelijke vooruitgang en benadrukt de drang van de universiteit naar ontwikkeling en vooruitgang.
