Het doel was onderzoek te doen naar de geschiedenis van de spiritualiteit in de Nederlanden vanaf de middeleeuwen. Door het vele materiaal dat de onderzoekers door de jaren heen verzamelden, werden ze gedwongen meermaals te verhuizen. De vleugel in het Onze-Lieve-Vrouwecollege op de Frankrijklei werd al snel te klein. Het genootschap moest uitwijken naar de Rubenslei 15 in 1931. Ook daar barstte de snelgroeiende collectie uit haar voegen en in 1937 drong een nieuwe verhuis zich op. Deze bevond zich op de Grote Kauwenberg 32. De branderij werden omgebouwd tot een modern boekenmagazijn waar in 1954 meer dan 50.000 boeken een onderkomen vonden. Een nieuwe en beter toegankelijke bibliotheek en leeszaal zorgden ervoor dat wetenschappelijk onderzoek in comfortabelere omstandigheden kon gebeuren.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vandaag herbergt de bibliotheek niet alleen een grote collectie boeken en tijdschriften, ze bezit ook een indrukwekkende collectie prenten.
