Op de foto\u2019s is de offici\u00eble opening van de campus op 3 juli 1972 afgebeeld. De UIA werd opgericht om te voorzien in doctoraats- en licentiaatsonderwijs in Antwerpen. Met uitzondering van de economische wetenschappen boden RUCA en UFSIA immers enkel kandidatuursopleidingen aan. Het zogenaamde \u2018Plan Kinsbergen\u2019 van toenmalig gouverneur Kinsbergen vormde de basis voor de oprichting van de UIA.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De UIA was een pluralistische universiteit, waarbij de hoogste beleidsorganen paritair moesten zijn samengesteld uit katholieken en niet-katholieken. Hierdoor werd de scheiding tussen rijksinstellingen en vrije instellingen overstegen. De UIA voerde een vernieuwend onderwijsbeleid in met een trimestersysteem, creditsysteem, beperkte hoorcolleges en een nadruk op actief onderwijs en zelfstudie. Na zijn dood in 2016 schonk zijn weduwe enkele fotoalbums en dossiers aan de Universiteit Antwerpen. Kinsbergen was van 1967 tot 1993 gouverneur van Antwerpen. Hij was van 1951 tot 1967 advocaat aan de balie van Antwerpen. Van 1959 tot 1966 was hij assistent aan de VUB en docent bij de Rijkshandelshogeschool. Tussen 1966 en 1991 doceerde hij Burgerlijk recht aan het RUCA. Als gouverneur lagen gezondheidszorg, onderwijs en welzijn hem na aan het hart. Zo was hij de drijvende kracht achter de oprichting van de UIA, het centrum voor gehandicaptenzorg Giels Bos in Gierle en het Universitair Ziekenhuis Antwerpen (UZA).
