In 1920 werd de Hogere Koloniale School (\u00c9cole Coloniale Sup\u00e9rieure) opgericht om studenten voor te bereiden op een carri\u00e8re in Belgisch-Congo. Deze opleiding, gevestigd aan de Middelheimlaan, groeide uit tot de eerste universitaire opleiding in Antwerpen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1923 werd de opleiding omgevormd tot Koloniale Hogeschool van Belgi\u00eb (Universit\u00e9 Coloniale de Belgique) en in 1949 tot Universitair Instituut voor de Overzeese Gebieden (eerst UNIOG, later UNIVOG), of Institut Universitaire des Territoires d\u2019Outre-Mer (INUTOM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De studenten droegen een uniform en konden twee studierichtingen volgen. Zowel voor de richting Koloniale en Administratieve Wetenschappen als voor de richting Handels- en Koloniale Wetenschappen konden er kandidaturen en licenties worden gevolgd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Na de onafhankelijkheid van Congo in 1960 werden geen nieuwe studenten meer toegelaten tot de opleiding, zodat de laatste lichting (gestart in academiejaar 1958-1959) in 1962 bij de opheffing van de academische activiteiten kon afstuderen. Op dat moment waren ook Rwanda en Burundi al onafhankelijk geworden (1962).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Samen met de Rijkshandelshogeschool en het Hoger Instituut voor Vertalers en Tolken (HIVT) werd UNIVOG in 1965 opgenomen in het RUCA. De opleiding fuseerde toen met de afdeling Internationale Samenwerking van de Rijkshandelshogeschool tot het College voor Ontwikkelingslanden, wat op zijn beurt in 2000 samenging met het Centrum Derde Wereld van de UFSIA tot het huidige Instituut voor Ontwikkelingsbeleid en -beheer (IOB).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De campus werd in de late jaren ’20 getroffen door een zware brand, maar in 1931 kon het gebouw heropend worden. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
