As a transport economist, I add some extra<\/em><br \/><em>applause for the heroes of transport and logistics: dock workers,<\/em><br \/><em>professional drivers, train drivers, inland shipping companies, logistics<\/em><br \/><em>warehouse workers, and the 1.3 million seafarers. However, few know this word originates from maritime transport. In the 14th century, the Italian trading cities wanted to protect themselves against contamination. Vessels from contaminated areas (plague, cholera) had <strong>to anchor in Italian ports for 40 days (quaranta giorni)<\/strong>. Similar to the situation in the 14th century, cruise ships (Japan, Egypt, Belgium\u2026) are now also quarantined during the corona crisis. In addition, some port authorities (e.g. Singapore) applied strict quarantine regulations to all ships from China, and some shipping companies no longer want to sail to certain countries (e.g. Italy).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-27eaf2c elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"27eaf2c\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-6b9be4b\" data-id=\"6b9be4b\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-01ead09 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"01ead09\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>Bigger impact than financial crisis<\/h2><p>It is still too early to gain insight into the proportions of the economic<br \/>impact of the corona crisis. What is certain, however, is that <strong>this crisis can<\/strong><br \/><strong>be of a different order<\/strong> than the SARS epidemic in 2003 and the financial economic<br \/>crisis in 2008.\u00a0<\/p><p>In contrast to the financial crisis, the corona virus has an <strong>impact on both<\/strong><br \/><strong>supply and demand<\/strong>. Depending on the disruption of the economy (for<br \/>example, the number of bankruptcies), the economy will recover in 2021<br \/>(according to IMF) or in 2023 (according to the OECD).<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u201cEverything depends on how fast we get the virus under control. If<\/em><br \/><em>we succeed in the second quarter, a quick recovery will follow. At the<\/em><br \/><em>moment, however, it does not seem likely.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-ae60d2a elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"ae60d2a\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-9fe21c9\" data-id=\"9fe21c9\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-44bcf8e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"44bcf8e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>Operational challenges<\/h2><p>There is no such thing as \u2018the\u2019 maritime sector. It is a sector with different<br \/>segments, the largest ones being dry bulk (43%), liquid bulk (31%) and<br \/>container liner shipping (13%). Immediately tangible for shipping companies in all market segments are the operational challenges:<\/p><ul><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ul><li><strong>Crew<\/strong>: postponement of crew changes;<\/li><li><strong>Sailing routes<\/strong>: decrease in port calls;<\/li><li><strong>Ship maintenance<\/strong>: shipping companies lose money on ships that are moored while waiting for maintenance;<\/li><li><strong>Shipbuilding<\/strong>: it is currently not possible to visit shipyards;<\/li><li><strong>Ship dismantling:<\/strong> decrease in labor on the scrapping market?<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><p>Other problems are linked to the uncertain evolution of freight rates \u2010 the<br \/>main source of income for the shipping companies \u2010 and reduced activity.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-7739055 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"7739055\" data-element_type=\"section\" class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b66a22b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b66a22b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li><strong>Low oil prices<\/strong> have increased the demand for (super) tankers for crude oil enormously in the short term, and the corona crisis will also further disrupt the market. In the long\u2010term, <strong>demand for crude oil will slow down due to lower economic activity<\/strong> (\u00b1 25% decline in domestic oil consumption) and cancellations of air travel (kerosene).<\/li><li>Shipping companies active in the LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) market are confronted with <strong>closing ports<\/strong> in countries such as India and Pakistan.<\/li><li><strong>Dry bulk<\/strong> is a fragmented market, both in terms of supply and demand. The largest ships are faced with low demand for iron ore, while the smaller ships \u2010 which transport raw materials such as grain, rice, sugar (food industry) and cement (construction sector) \u2010 are always under pressure in times of weak economic growth.<\/li><li>Initially, the impact on container shipping was less tangible, but by now the <strong>demand for containers has also decreased<\/strong> due to the rapidly changing market situation (lockdowns).<\/li><\/ul><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u201cShipping companies with financial reserves will be able to cope. Others <\/em><em>will suffer or might not overcome this.\u201d<\/em><\/p><h1>Impact on the Port of Antwerp<\/h1><p>Belgium is an open economy with several very important ports. <strong>Our country mainly trades with European countries<\/strong> such as France, Germany, the Netherlands and Italy (respectively 6.2%, 5.6%, 4.0% and 2.4% of added value). The traffic in the ports of Antwerp and Zeebrugge also largely consists of European destinations, followed by traffic to and from Asia. In 2019, according to the FPS Economy, the Chinese market accounted for 1.8% and 2.8% of total Belgian exports and imports, respectively.<\/p><p>The port of Antwerp has the advantage that it plays a <strong>prominent role in the so\u2010called &#8220;continuous sector&#8221; or chemical sector<\/strong>, that still operates 24\/7. It is increasingly rumored that a long\u2010term economic disruption may eventually lead to various industries, including shipping, reflecting on over\u2010reliance on one country or continent, and perhaps considering relocating some activities outside of China.
