They talk about fewer fish in the river, trees that no longer bear fruits, animals retreating deeper into the forest,” says Franlu Vulliermet (Centre for Ethics). In his doctoral research, he developed what he calls a “philosophy of withering relations“. Travelling from dilapidated rooftops in Almeria to Indigenous communities in Ecuador, and from there to the writings of a forgotten nineteenth-century Japanese activist, he argues that environmental problems are not first about substances out of place, but about the slow unravelling of the bonds that hold worlds together. (Text: Franlu Vulliermet)

From epigenetics to the Amazon

The thesis did not start in the Amazon Rainforest. It began with books and biology, with a question about epigenetics (which is how environmental factors influence the expressions of genes). With the observation that research increasingly shows that organisms and their surroundings constitute each other, breaking down the outdated schism between nurture and nature. “The more I tried to write about pollution in those terms, the more I noticed that even the basic vocabulary was unsatisfactory philosophically speaking,” Franlu explains. “What exactly is ’the environment’? What is ‘a pollutant’, once we accept that there are no fully separate beings to be polluted in the first place?” To get past abstraction, he went to a place where pollution is not a measurement but a lived experience.

Pollution is not a number; it is a forest gone quiet

For several weeks Franlu lived with Kichwa families in the Upper Napo region of Ecuador, an area shaped by oil extraction and rapid social change. There he learned that “pollution” in everyday Kichwa speech is not a technical word at all. It is closer to grief: fewer fish, dimmer harvests, a forest that no longer answers when you call. The Kichwa notion of sumak kawsay (translated as “the good life”) is not merely an ideal but a practice: living together with humans and more-than-humans through food, work and care. Pollution, in that world, is what happens when those relations fray. “There is a word for that experience in environmental psychology,” Franlu notes. “It’s called solastalgia: the homesickness you feel without leaving home, rather it is your home leaving you.”

A common opossum tied in a way to prevent it from coming back to life and running away. Source: Author

Ox Against the Storm

Back in Europe, Franlu found a striking echo in the writings of Tanaka Shōzō, the first Japanese environmental activist, who in the 1890s fought against the Ashio copper mine. Tanaka developed his own conception of pollution using the terms doku (poison) and nagare (flow) to argue that pollution was a disruption of flows that were at once material, social, ecological and political. “More than a century ago he already saw that you cannot fight pollution by measuring one substance at one point,” Franlu says. “You have to look at what stops moving, and what breaks down at every level.”

Contact

Franlu Vulliermet | Francois-Lucien.Vulliermet@uantwerpen.be

Thesis: Smoldering Decay.
