Do you feel like you belong? What is home? Where is it?

Thomas Froy’s examination of the notion of ‘dwelling’ in contemporary Jewish Thought confronts the way that we think of home and exile today. Jews have often been seen as strangers and foreigners, but what does this tell us about our ideas of belonging, for Jews and non-Jews alike? We need a notion which goes beyond abstract figures, claims Froy, and refers to an experience of everyday, domestic life. (text: Thomas Froy)

Ecology and nationalism

How do we imagine home today? Environmental thinkers call for rethinking our relationship with Planet Earth: we have been abusing the Planet, and we must realise that – for the time being – we have no alternative. A change is required: we need to start acting in accordance with the truth, that Earth is our home.

At the same time, ethno-nationalists and xenophobes call for ‘remigration’ in the face of a ‘Great Replacement’: we must return to our roots, they claim, in the face of a foreign flood. Here, too, the notion of ‘home’ is at play.

Dwelling in Jewish Thought

For a long time now, Jews have been associated with exile: in Biblical stories and historical events, Jews are often cast as the Other par excellence. But perhaps, suggests Froy, this association needs rethinking. What can Jewish Thought tell us about the opposite of exile – the home? In studies of Martin Buber, Emmanuel Levinas and Jacques Derrida, Froy searches for a notion of home which goes beyond the perception of Jews as foreigners and which can critically engage with today’s discourses of home.

Judaism and everyday life

According to some scholars, Judaism is a religion of the here and now: Jewish thinkers have emphasised the importance of living ethically in this world, rather than focussing only about the world to come. In Martin Buber’s work, there is an emphasis on dialogue, and therefore on the daily interactions and encounters which define everyday life. Thinking about home, from Buber’s perspective, means thinking about home as it appears in everyday life. Similarly, in Levinas’ thinking, Froy finds an emphasis on the banality – or domesticity – of the home: it is a place for eating and sleeping. Finally, in Derrida’s work, hospitality is championed: it is in providing hospitality for others that we understand what it means to be at home.

Froy concludes the dissertation with a reflection on the challenges and opportunities which face Jewish Thought today: a more complex and important task than ever before!

Thomas Froy | thomas.froy@uantwerpen.be

Doctoral defence 20/04/2026

Do you feel at home?
