Formele toegang tot hoger onderwijs betekent niet automatisch dat alle studenten zich ook erkend voelen binnen en zich een legitiem lid voelen van de universitaire gemeenschap. De centrale vraag verschuift daarmee van wie toegang krijgt naar wie zich werkelijk onderdeel voelt van de universiteit. Jente De Coninck volgde voor zijn doctoraat dezelfde studenten doorheen de tijd op, om na te gaan hoe hun 'sense of beloning' zich ontwikkelde en hoe ze zelf betekenis gaven aan hun ervaringen.
